Is there anyway to practice upper cuts on a heavy bag?
There are no local gyms, and i would like to practice uppercuts like i can everything else (jabs/cross/hook) on my 100lbs bag. I'd prefer not to buy an uppercut only bag, as that would make it difficult to work them into combinations efficently. So....how do you guys practice uppercuts at home? |

You could get on your knees, and then uppercut the underside of the bag!!
(only joking!)Honestly, I don't know, but it has been one of those things thats bugged me too. I remember being the odd one out in a class once, so I decided to work out on the bag for a bit. I couldn't really uppercut the bag to great effect at all, so I resorted to using shovel hooks. It's an interesting question though. Steven |

One thing you can do is practice body shots to the bag...an uppercut has a similar body mechanic to kidney punches (at least the way I was taught).

Get a frien or anybody to hold a focus mitt out for you to hit it. Other than that there are bags you can buy that are heavy bags with and uppercut ring on them. I say one on the net for $550.
I just have my freind 18visions hold a focus mitt.

This is a good question. I haven't had much success training an uppercut on a heavy bag either.
What I have done is trained the uppercut in the air before the bag. At this point I am working various combinations only NOT actually making contact with it when I throw the uppercut. This can still help with proper mechanics and technique. There are other times when I get the bag swinging and as it swings back and away from me I'll step in and throw some non textbook uppercuts. These will drive in at somewhat of an angle and not straight up. I have seen others tape additional padding (or purchase attachments) around their bags to somewhat form a ridge and simulate a head/chin. I haven't tried this myself as I don't know if it would hold up but it might be worth a try. Good luck! |

Look up the mushroom bag, it is for uppercuts. i did not see the mushroom bag on their site. They do not always list everything on the web. But they did have an uppercut bag listed. http://www.ringside.com/store/produc...4&pagenumber=6 If you call the 800# you can get the info. on the mushroom bag.

One thing I did (in the good ol’ garage) was take a 4x6 plank bolted it in horizontally between two support beams. Then tied my kick shield to it facing down. The bag worked great. Also you could do this with a duffel bag filled with rags, or towels. Just tie bag or something with a little give that you won’t break your hands on to any horizontal surface you can find. Make sure it's the right height for you.

Thanks for the replies....i found an attachment for heavy bags.
http://www.ringside.com/store/prodin...m=50&mitem=126 Considering that the bag was a gift, i suppose i could afford the attachment (and some more hand wraps, mine stink!) |

If you want to practice uppercuts, practice not on a standard heavy bag but on an uppercut bag, most if not all boxing equipment makers offer it for sale. Personally I prefer the uppercut bag to the standard heavy bag. You can practice not only uppercuts but jabs, crosses etc. As long as the intended target is the head.

I can do left uppers on a heavy bag, I just do it really close, theyre not full uppers but short uppers, so basically you go through about half the motion, but its really good if you want to actually learn a short upper, great for close range.
The begginning of the upper cut motion moves forward a little bit and then up, so doing that beginning is still useful. You won't go straight into the bag and do a lot of damage, but you'll still hit it with about half the force, which is still useful because you learn the motion with a little bit of resistance. You can get a fairly light heavy bag 20-60 pounds and then if you're strong enough to move it back far enough when hitting it, throw in combos with a finishing upper while the bag is on an angle away from you. |
