Hi,
I just finished meeting with former 2 time world boxing champ Reggie Johnson (http://www.boxingpress.de/records/REGGIE.HTM) about putting together some video's and dvd's on boxing training. If anyone has some ideas for the video's I'd love to hear them. Currently, Reggie is training like a madman for a fight in July or August and then on to take two world title belts from Antonio Tarver. Hopefully, being world champ again will help promotions!! Thanks, Tim |

I'm by no means an expert, however I am new, which in this case could give you a good perspective that someone advanced, probably like yourself, wouldn't be able to shed on this. Are these videos intended to be for beginners, intermediates, or advanced people? Advanced people would probably just stick with their coachs advice, and what they learn themselves from fighting so probably wouldn't even buy them.
For beginners I think going through handwrapping would be good, then showing proper stance then like the 4 basic punches. Jab, Right Cross/Straight Right, Left Hook, and Uppercut. I think it would be good to show like him doing it slow to show mechanics, and like before every new punch is introduced, show maybe 15 seconds of action packed clips of him doing those, from previous fights, knockdowns with those punches would be real cool. After going through the punches the basic defensive manuevers should be shown. Slips, Bob And Weave, Parry, Block, Jab Catching, you know. If time is still left, or if another installment is the plan I think a boxer's workout would be good. Introduce shadowboxing and hitting the heavy bag. Some jump roping too. Thats my current say, if you respond I can see if I can give some further advice. |

Awesome Tim!
I think Turing summed up a lot of good things. How about putting together 3-7 punch combos, reflex drills, counter punching and going over ring strategies - (how to cut the ring off, how to get out of the corner or off the ropes, how to fight the brawler, classical boxer and taller fighter). And if its no too much, a section on proper diet, fighter psychology, winning attitude and how to adjust from gym sparring to amateur comp and from amateur to pro - how to get a sponsor?? Thanks

Hi Tim:
There are lots of videos out there that cover basic offensive skills, such as the mechanics of properly throwing punches, but I haven't run across any that do a good job of teaching defensive skills. I suggest you guys cover (perhaps in a whole video) basic defensive skills and include good exercises and drills that someone training at home can use to improve. I also suggest that your focus be on teaching techniques that are useful for effective self-defense, rather than instructing people on how to win boxing matches. More specifically, you guys should cover things like the use of elbows, headbutts, arm wrenches, etc. and ways to defend against the same. Any chance you might be able to get him to conduct a seminar at your school after his fight? If so, SIGN ME UP!!! Regards. |

Hey guys,
Thanks for the great tips! Those are very helpful. We plan to do a whole series of tapes/dvd's that will apply to different market segments. Some topics that I'd put together include the following: Boxing for Kids Boxing for Fitness (targets women) Boxing for the Martial Artist Boxing Instructor/Coach Certification Course Physical Training for Boxing Boxing Offense Boxing Defense Boxing Footwork & Drills Boxing Training with Equipment – Heavy Bag Boxing Training with Equipment – Speed Bag Boxing Training with Equipment – Double-end Bag Boxing Training with Equipment – Focus Mitts ____________________________________________ Based on your suggestions I'll also suggest Reggie do the following: Dirty Boxing (elbows, headbutts, arm wrenches) Ring Strategies - (how to cut the ring off, how to get out of the corner or off the ropes, how to fight the brawler, classical boxer and taller fighter) - we'll be filming in a boxing gym so we'll have use of a ring. Boxing Topics - proper diet, fighter psychology, winning attitude and how to adjust from gym sparring to amateur comp and from amateur to pro - how to get a sponsor?? _________________________________________ Turing - he's going to put out boxing for different levels of skill and knowledge - beginner, intermediate, advanced, etc.... Handwrapping and basic skills will all be included in the beginner tape. For a seminar setting he actually suggested that after teaching a technique or combination that we show on a tv him using the technique in one of his fights. I think that would be great in the seminar setting as well as including it on his tapes. PocketAces - he's definitely going to be teaching a seminar at my school. In fact, he's stopping by Monday evening from 7:00 - 8:30 during my class to meet everyone. He's already taught 2 seminars for me in the past and everyone that attended loved them. It's not too often you get hands on training with a world champion!!! Here are some other ideas we're tossing around: 4 Day Boxing Camp 1 & 2 Day Boxing Seminars Team Taught Seminars – 2 hrs. boxing, 2 hrs. jiu-jitsu, 2 hrs. Thaiboxing, etc… Boxing Certification Program (based on levels) Custom Video/DVD Private Lessons Seminar Circuit T-Shirts Private Label Gear (The Reggie Johnson Line) – Boxing Gloves, Focus Mitts, Head Gear, etc... Corporate Sponsorship Open a Boxing/Martial Arts/Fitness Training Center? “The Reggie Johnson Grill” ![]() Keep the ideas coming!! Tim Last edited by Tim Mousel; 06-02-2003 at 12:49 AM. |

Where can I get these type of videos online? I checked at the local video stores here, and they didnt even have any decent fight tapes. I wish they had fights on dvd.

Hi PocketAces - just spoke to you on the phone but I'll answer here also in case anyone else was wondering.
Reggie won't be teaching tonight. He's just stopping in to say hello and meet everyone. Class schedule will be the same. Tim |

We're in the process of gathering the material for the "Boxing for the Martial Artist" video. Wednesday I'm going to meet with Reggie and am going to attack him with leg kicks, front kick, side kick, Thai clinch with knees, headbutts, elbows, and a tackle. We're going to see how he responds using boxing. I have a feeling I'm going to be leaving the meeting with a headache!!
What would you expect to see on such a tape? Any input would be helpful. Thanks, Tim |

Awesome!
Good punching combos for MAs to practice.. How about timing the rear roundhouse with a right cross, slipping the side kick/front kick and getting inside, sidestepping attmpted take downs followed by a defensive uppercut or hook, punching the thigh from the thai clinch (?), executing arm wrenches against punches, how to head butt in a covert manner, how to use your shoulder to keep distance... How to keep pressure on various MAs with boxing (like Hoost does so well), ring strategy applied to MA, maybe boxing self-defense applications - like how to get to a clinch to neutralize without hurting, how and where to hit when being grabbed (good for women)

If you're going to throw a rear roundhouse without setting it up, i.e., throwing it with the expectation he'll step in and nail you with the right hand, make sure you wear headgear and keep your left hand up!
Seriously, I'll be most interested in finding out how he responds to tackles and bum rushes, particularly if his room to maneuver is limited. I'd also like to find out how he responds to kicks that he doesn't know are coming. For example, kick him low with your right leg several times, then fake the right, switch and kick him with the left. Be careful! |
