Heavy bag in apartment - too loud?

Didn't get much response in the training forum and thought I'd ask this again here:

I'd like to get one of those floor-standing heavy bags for my apartment. Anyone here try that? Do heavy punches send a lot of noise through the floor, or would it be tolerable for the neighbors?

It doesn't matter which forum you post in, it is still too loud. Believe me. I have 70 kg on sand in the base of mine, and it flies around the floor and bounces about. Your neighbours will not like you very much if you put one of those things in an apartment above their heads.

No. It was a joke. Banging and clunking around, especially when hitting and kicking a floor based impact device, will not cause any disturbance to people down stairs whatsoever! Why, you could play basketball with an elephants testicle and still not cause any noise. What possibly made you consider that it might?

Hey Ringthing it depends on the bag and the apartment. A friend had this Everlast freestander:

He had thick carpeting in a pretty solid building and the neighbors said it never bothered them.

The other kind of freestander fills with water or sand. I hear sand is better because it's heavier, and putting a few layers of evenly-laid rubber matting is a good insulater. Just make sure it's even so the bag stand doesn't rock.

And if your floor is too thin after all that, you can always just shadowbox your guts out instead. Be that guy at the gym with perfect form!

Thanks BFG. I've got carpetting and access to some good padding so I might be OK. I also like the model you showed. It seems that hanging from a properly anchored floor-standing frame would transmit much less impact to the floor than a bag that's built into the floor stand.

I'm also thinking I can just use it for practicing fast punching at medium strength, and save my heavy punches and kicks for the gym.

If the bag still causes trouble I guess I can always trade it in for a full-length mirror and take you up on the shadowboxing suggestion. Basically I'm looking for something productive to do during commercial breaks!
