Is a Muay Thai bag suitable for boxing practice or is a regular heavy bag better?

Losing is unacceptable
I would actually suggest the Mui Tai bag, simply becuase it is a bit stiffer, gives you more of a solid impact when you train and makes you more ready for the actual striking of someone.

what would you recommend I fill it with?
Michael Neal
I filled my bag with sawdust, and that worked fine. Friends recommended that I use rice husks though. However if neither is available sand or rags might do, or some combination thereof as one might render the bag too heavy for its supports and the other render it undesirably light.

make sure you bracket or support can take the weight of the bag.
my bag is filled half with sand and half with rags but all the sand has settled at the bottom now which is great for shin kicks but the middle to top is really soft to hit. you can turn the bag upside down and hit the bottom to dislodge the sand and spread it out abit but its only short term solution. if i fill it totally with sand then it will be too heavy.
i am thinking of trying rice or something
hope this helps

Briggfoot is right about the bracket for the bag. It will require something substantial as the bracket will not only have to absorb the downward force of the bag, but all the dynamic loads you will apply to it. From my own experience I would advise you to not even waste your time with bicycle wall hooks.

what about one of those free standing bag stands?
Michael Neal
Well actually that is what I am using now. (I gave the heavy canvas bag to a coworker.) The Wave Master is working out okay, but I do end up walking it around the patio with my strikes. I do worry however that continually being pushed around on the concrete patio will wear a hole in the base. It is more expensive though, and my own bag is the result of friends and family chipping in on my birthday. Also since theft is rather common around here I carry the bag portion into the house after I am done.
