ROSS is very good and so is systema, combat sambo, etc, but you have to remember some of these things may not be available where he lives. As a novice with no real MA experience it is difficult to learn correctly from books and videos. There is no question and answer dynamics, no resistance to work against. Some one with experience can learn this way, but usually not a novice.

So Samurai guy what is available to you? If nothing practical then books/vids might be the best route, but remember the limitations

When Larry Hartsell came to Bruce Lee, "all he had" was wrestling. Bruce encouraged him to keep it, and incorporated it into the jkd mix.

You are fortunate to have it as your first martial art. In case you've been living on another planet for the last coupla years, strikers are falling all over themselves to learn some form of grappling these days whether it be BJJ, Judo Sambo or what ever! Heck! Even Im spending time with with an all city HIGH school wrestler just to learn the fundamentals!!
Add a basic striking art to your arsenal like muay thai which will combine the best of boxing plus those great knee elbow and low roundkicks, and you're on your way to putting together an art that can handle all ranges!

Do not neglect learning practical self defense as well, and seek out instruction in those areas particularly in the use of edge weapons, improvised weapons, firearms etc.
Good luck. Happy hunting.

Yeah by practical I didnt mean flip kicking anyone in the face i meant punching them in the throat or kidneys or something..... thanks for everyones input though... I was looking at Muay Thai but I cant find a school near me (Waterdown Ontario Canada) however there was a BJJ school listed in the yellow pages and I thought that might be interesting to look into. BJJ seems to have a good reputation here even though I have no clue what its about... I plan on finding out. As for weapons i'll think about that later , but willl most likely look into blunt weapons like Kali sticks or something like that... maybe just carry around a big ass club or something haha, and ive watched enuff Highlander to know my way around a katana (Lol i'm joking dont worry) and as for fire arms... i dont really plan on shooting someone soo ill just stay away from that....
thx for the input and any future comments would be cool.

Stay away from folkstyle wrestling, primarily what they do in high school. It's almost useless since it has no submissions. Even submission wrestling doesn't compare to Ju-Jitsu.

Lol my school doesnt have a wrestling team, and if they did I'd be running it... I watched a grade 9 gym class doing wrestling , during my fitness class at the same time, the teacher had me wrestle one after another and no kid took me more then 30 seconds to put on the ground and give up. Gotta love those elbow take downs and armbars.

Doing good so far, keep on the weight training and studying more wrestling is a good help.

muay thai kickboxing and western boxing are really good. the best part about these 2 arts is that there also both tough workouts. both will put u in great shape if u train hard. at my school they teach westernboxing and muay thai together. we do lots of stretching, and warming up, and skipping rope. we also have to do tons up pushups, squats, crunches, bagwork drills, and tons of abwork in addition to learning techquies and sparring. i used to have horrible cardio endurance, but now its way higher than before. alot of other martial arts dont dont incoroporate a tough workout into the training.

plus the skills u learn in each will help u in self defense. u will be faster, used to seeing stuff coming at u, good reflexes, in good shape, good endurance, good blocking, evasion, footwork, powerful and fast combinations, and how to clinch, and u will be able to take hits. hell, if u dont even want to fight, u would have the cardio endurance to outrun people easily.

wrestling is really good too if u traing hard in that. the training in wrestling includes the workout aspect alot too. it gives u awesome endurance and physical strength. most wrestling coaches wont even let u practice if u arent lifting hard and working out n the gym like everyday. i actually have a friend who lives in las vegas and he is an awesome wrestler on his high school team. he is also very physically strong from all the lifting he does. i thihnk his record was like like 20 wins and no llosses. him and his buddy who was also a wrestler in great shape happened to see 4 guys bothering some chicks in front of a liquer store and decided they didnt like what the 4 guys were doing. my buddy and his friend sent 3 of the guys to the hospital, and the 4rth ran away. my friend personally broke the arm of one of them for trying to lunge at him with a knife, and the other 2, 1 had a broken jaw, and the other had a hardcore concussion. my friend was gonna get arrested but the store manager and the chicks vouched for him.

i think like, no matter what u train in , if u get good at it, thats what will help u out when ur in need it.
