Just wondering which are some good Martial Arts to learn for practical self defense. Any opinions would be helpful. Wrestling is only previous Martial arts background and do not claim to be an expert in any way at that. If it helps I'm 5'10 weigh 160, and do alot of weight training. Any help would be good. Thanks.

Samurai Guy,
1) Figure out first what you want. Some people want the atmosphere of a dojo/kwoon etc.. While others want comraderie, and others want to just work out. If you want to learn how to fight to defend yourself from anything from the street. Look for a school that applies what they do to street situations or actual fighting situations. Skip schools that train for sport (some tae kwon do schools). 2) Go with something practical and efficient. If the training is more painful than the mugging, whats the point? 3) Nothing is wrong with the classics, Boxing and Wrestling. Boxing is still hands-down practical, efficient and easy to learn. 4) Ask alot of questions at a potential school. 5) Ignore the "keyboard warriors" that are on this forum. They spend more time on here than training. I have my short list of schools I would recommend, but without knowing what it is your training for there's no point in listing them and what they offer you. Just be honest with yourself as to what you are training for. -SA |

No. He may be under the misaprehension that what he sees on TV is "practical" but, even then, I think not. Those people wander into any McDojo. The fact he has asked this question strongly suggests that he is above that.
But you don't seem to be. |

Awwww, I'm sorry. I didn't know you were vying for his affection and attention. I figure since you're speaking on his behalf you are probably stricken with a "man-crush". |

Nuts kicking, neck hitting, and bonebraking techniques. Darriation style. Just joking brother. I prefer arnis or kali for knives.
