well ht, I appreciate the link. Seeing as you ask, i want to launch a real serious attack on a smuck I have an unsettled score with, I cannot go get my Glock 17 (from where its buried, {ya reading this ThaiBri policeman, yep in the uK }) because its too damn loud and so I will learn the Sword, and I want a sword short enough to conceal and to become highly skilled with it so that i dont cut me own toes off.

I could give you the old "I want to be a better person and pure martial artist so that i never have to fight and i can then love others like never before and spread good things around the world", but I'm an honest guy

I have been told to "just do " either wushu daido or tai chi daido.
I can't remember but I will find out. When I first got to my cma school the
instructor's said just do it.

I know the Daido drill for my school(Beginner's) and it's kool- but the application's are downright scary- don't ever think about actually using it.

The purpose of learning weapon's as far as I know is to develop footwork, sensitivity to the other person's movement's( we call it KILL for some inexplicable reason...meaning Contact?!!), and to most importantly issue power to the end of the weapon.

Please tell me more...I have just started in January and really do like the Daido.

We learnt the Gwan, then Daido and now DAggers(two double sided..Surling
Bey-Sao). Next will be Butterfly knives, Tit Check(Sai's) and I'm not sure about brown belt. In red we learn the Gim(Straight Tai Chi sword).
We revisit the Daido and the G'wan twice more. The G'wan is the flexy staff-long range. The Daido is the flexy sword with the curved back-Mid range. The dagger's are obviously short-range.

fencing is a bit to 'stiff & formal', i want to learn some real serious sword and knife fighting, I am looking into sayoc at the moment.

well, i don't condone going out and attacking a man with any kind of blade, but because you want it for fighting (aka, practical uses) then i would suggest learning sayoc, or kali or something of the sort
although, cutting off ones toes isn't good either

m.artist, i do find myself drawn to the Phillipino arts for weapons usage, its very hard to find a place that does them in the UK (anywhere near the place that i am currently stuck in )
having started some serious looking around and enquiring, I think the best and most useful thing to learn to start with will be knife usage and from what i can see Kali is the way to go, god only knows where i can find a Kali school/teacher here but I will do if there is one and i will go for private one on one lessons as I usually do for deadly serious fast track intense learning.

For pure pleasure after learning knives, i will then learn the sword and am inclined towards Japanese styles for this.

Having only learnt firearms myself and never getting round to Sword or Knife arts, I wonder how long it takes to get reasonably effective with a blade?, any idea?, do you think it would be worthwhile going over to the Phillipines for 3 months or so?

well I just found out that to have private lessons with the sayoc group is $300 per hour, they do a special deal for 10 x 1 hour sessions for 3000 bucks!!

Also, there is no access to the excellent Sayoc Kali system in the UK whatsoever. This is a shame but then again at 300 per hour they can take a hike.

Does anyone know of appx equivalent Kali systems (knife) being taught in the UK??

well with a good instructor, you can be pretty good within a few months. although it's too bad that nobody half way decent lives in the uk (what part?) that teaches for less than 300 bucks an hour

m.artist, the 300 bucks guy is one of the Sayoc clan/tribe (see sayoc.com), thats the only rate mentioned and is in the US & Canada only, but I have been pointed to some other places in the UK that do other systems of Kali, i am looking into this and making enquiries this morning.

I heard that many of the special forces, SEALS, SAS, etc learn Kali for blade fighting/defense. Not sure which particualr style but Filipino it is.

ya they also learn from some prestigious wing chun guy, and the american master of karate, and some famous judoka
everyone says they train special forces
don't listen to that
listen to them as you spar, then you know how good they are
