Thai Bri and I have had our differences, but I have to agree with him on this. REAL kung fu is excellent. Some kenpo is excellent. BJJ learned along with good stand up fighting is excellent. Muay Thai kicks, knees, and punches are devastating.

Hmmmm....does the best really exist?

What ever you take if you’re serious about SD needs to have weapons appropriate training meaning firearms (if legal where you live), knives, stick/baton, OC sprays and other like small concealable weapons, and other improvised weapons. Remember weapons beats empty hands, it can beat multiples, armed assailants and people who just plain out class you with size, weight, and strength.

You need to be able to fight in striking range, punches, kicks, and other basic strikes. You will also need to be able to fight in grappling range, clinch and ground.

The system need to teach aggressive forward drive strategies as well as more generalized techniques rather than a bunch of specific techniques. It needs to place a high bar when it comes to teaching combat psychology and killer mindset, the importance of preemption and strong violent and aggressive counter offensive.

The techniques need to be simple to learn, easy to retain, and straight forward to perform under high stress, fear, and adrenal states. Adrenal stress conditioning needs to paramount in training, employing a high degree of live action high intensity drills that are not choreographed, cooperative, or gamed.

The instructor should be someone with a high degree of real world experience, someone who has been in the thick of shit more than just a time or two. A guy who is or has been a professional who has seen real combat, like someone who is an experienced law enforcement officer, a doorman, bodyguard, an operator, and etc. Not just a dojo rat with one or two low intensity, low use of force skirmishes. These kinds of instructors will teach you what works not just crap that some inexperienced in the real world instructor taught them. Basically you want a no non-sense no bull shit “Salty Dog” for an instructor.

Also you need to remember that a good SD program will not only teach you to fight they will teach you to fight dirty. They should also teach you how to stay out of bad situations in the first place. SD is not about self-improvement, its not about finding your spiritual side, it's not a social activity, or about getting into shape or fitness. It's about avoiding fights and if it is unavoidable then learning how to turn your fellow man into a pile of bloody rubble in the fastest amount of time possible.

There is more to it but if you can find a place that teaches as above you have a good start.

The best system is the system of negotiation and diplomacy. To not fight is another day without battle scars and injuries. Regardless of what you do, you will always be beaten since no one is immortal. If you can beatup 20 guys the 21st guy will probably beat you up, if you can stop 3 people with knives then the 4th one will probably kill you etc. No matter what you do, there is always someone better than you and events cant be predicted through any training. Reality is not a Kill Bill situation, you cannot expect to defeat hundreds of people without hundreds defeating you yourself.
