Default is it true?

that if we study kung fu we can defend ourselves against more than 1 person lets say, 15?

Is it like in those jet li movies where he beats up everyone?

where the HELL did you get that idea ? oh yeah JET LI

the classics said one monk could beat ten men unarmed and 100 with a cudgel...apparently they were REALLY good and WE all suck today because i dont see anything like happening in reality in todays world...it could have been exaggeration

Jet li is the worst freakin example of what actual kung fu is and is about in the history of the world...he is also the best example of a wire working dojo ballerina who has completly ruined any hope of ever seeing a good kung fu flick again...

Btw that pompus ass said in an interview "dont bother to learn kf for self defense, if you need help dial 911"....for someone who got rich ruining peoples impressions of it thats a pretty shitty attitude

I think the matrix and bullet proof monk both had better fight scenes than any jet li flick ever...not that they were realistic but they showed you dont have to be a martial artist to do the crap jet li tries to pass off....

I don't know how many people you can defend against, but bear in mind most Chinese Martial Arts have movements in them (usually illustrated in their forms) which were used in battles, where you may find your self fighting more than one opponent. Many of the weapon forms (e.g. the pole) show this a lot, with big circular movements used to hit or disrupt more than one person around you.

Also, remember, thieves/muggers may attack in groups, it would be common sense to develop ways to fight more than one person, back then when your life may depend on it.

Further more, it depends who you are fighting, whether its a group of Chavs, Drunks, Bouncers, trained fighters, teenagers looking for a fight etc....

To your Jet Li point, I would say, that if you were really skilled, and found yourself in a fight with lots of people, I suppose it is possible to fight them all off. For example if the fight went something like, 5 people attack you, you totally destroy the closest one, then break limbs and floor another one, the remaining three, start to think twice before trying to hit you or may even run etc.... but that depends again who you are fighting.

But since I have never had to fight multiple opponents, I don't know what its like, only assume on the experiences of others.

If 5 guys are attacking you its a fair bet at least one of them is going to have a weapon...sure Martial arts in the hands of professional warriors with the proper mindset and a social and political enviroment that allows you to kill and cripple your opponents makes it possible but pretty damn unlikely...realize also the men who built those arts were much more fit people who lived hard lives and worked with thier hands, not weekend warrrior types who have desk jobs. so in essence very few people can BEAT UP 5 guys at once.....

Excepting of course jet li and keanu reeves

dear need answers
I've studied shaolin kung fu for 7 years, and as part of our advanced rank testing, we had to defend against multiple attackers. Can it be done, the best i could hope for would be to incapacitate the first attacker intimidate the second and maby run from the third... It's realy intimidating

I agree, but I believe that it is possible if you train hard enough and diligently, you could reach a level for skill to fight multiple opponents.

You forgot to mention Wesley Snipes, Mr Miagi (Don't know spelling) and whos that other guy......dammmit, I can't remember his name...... oww yea it Bruce Lee.......cough** cough**

Movie style Kung Fu has jack shit to do with real fighting. And taking on 5 people or more is only possible if they are an average age of 6.

Thai, what do you mean man? How much experience have you had in fighting. if you lived in hard enough times, 'twould be nearly mandatroy for survival to learn how to ned off such groups. Appearantly, you haven't done much. Not saying I dwarf you in age or anything but really...that's a bit of an inexperience thing to say that they'd all have to be 6 year olds.

It really isn't possible to fight off multiple opponents. Your best bet if you're surrounded is to just find an open spot that you're close to, cover your head and run like hell.
