edit:I cant belive i bought into this ^ lies, lies. TSD is shotokan with a Korean name and an emphasis on hip movement.

Pretty interesting video. The Fajin punch is like putting a whip like movement in your body and arm i guess. We do that kind of movement in our wingtsun practice. People say WingTsun has no grappeling or groundfighting. But our sifu combines WT with many other arts. We do a bit of aiki-jutsu, muay thai and even some chin-na during practice. Our sifu is making a MA combining many styles to create a efficient street defence system. Pretty interesting.

still looks pithy, compared to a good jab even.

...I guess for a short punch...maybe.

The wrist and tensing mechanics could, perhaps, be applied to other, more devestating punches with better body mechanics and weight shifting to add more zing.

I.e. to make damn sure that you don't just snap or push with your strikes.
...but fajing...isn't at all, in my opinion, an internal thing, it has to do with leverage and timing. Look at Bruce Lee's one inch punches...timing, leverage, and LOT of muscular force behind the strike.

hehehe all you ever saw from bruce was the arm, the whole body can get into the act...its MUCH more powerful than the 1 inch punch.

the above comment is borderline insulting. bruce uses every bit of force he can muster in that punch, from all parts of his body. more power? he knocked a judo gold metalist a few feet back into a chair, then the guy tpped over the back of the chair, id say it was relatively powerful.

Get over it...i didnt say bruce couldnt hit harder than that...i said he chose to demonstrate the arm....hell its been 30 some odd years and most of you still cant comprehend the 1 inch punch...if he had shown the mechanics of the whole body you would be confused even worse because as it was he picked the simplest thing he could find to isolate and demonstrate the concept.

Really man get off the Bruce Lee was god kick....

My opinions;

Its was shocking, the guy doesn't evne know how to use his waist. He explains its about a waist movement then tries doing this my turning his hips. If he was using his waist properly, his hips would remain racing forward, and his shoulders would rotate.

If he was good at this then it would be hard to even see his shoulders move, and you would have to put you hand on his abdoman to feel the waist move.

Also he talks some about raising onto his toes.

@the bruce lee punch: if you are talking about the one inch punch caught on video, from my experience of CMA then his display of it was bad, but I suppose for his style of fighting/concepts of a punch it may have been good.

A video of these machanics you speak of in action would be nice, especially throwing an actual strike.

As for raising on his toes sometimes...if you ever actually learn to throw a fajin strike, you might be suprised to find that sometimes both feet leave the ground for a split second. raising up, more like being pulled up from the force of the strike is common when you deliver fajin punches...palms dont do it so much.
Whos Earles?

How am I too measure the speed and power of his or anyone elses punch?

A video would be nice, but you should be able to see these mechanics in most CMA. The mechanics are similar to those he explains on the video, where power is generated by the waist and flows up and out of the arm, with a whip like motion. However, on the video the guys says he is using his waist, but its clear to see that he is not, as both his hips are moving and his legs are twisting with the movement.

As for the raising of the toes, it seems to go against any idea of rooting, especially when you make contact and punch. Surley the punch would be more powerful if you didn't come off the ground. And what happens if you face a skillful opponent, who uses this raising (if you attaked with a fajin) to take advantage. Unless fajin is more of a finishing move. I dunno

Anyway thanks for reply

Earle is the guy in the clip...lots of people talk a good fajin punch...Earle actually throws one....he hits VERY hard...I dont disagree he could get more waist and less hip into the punch.

However fajin doesnt require the firm root of external strikes...its uses a floating root...and if one of earles fajin strikes lands ....your finished

Fa (explosive) Jin (stored energy)...Earle is a Yang stylest, so you may be used to the shakes of a different style of internal CMA.
