Default Qi Gong

Qi Gong (气功 - pronounced 'chee'4 'gung'1)

Literally means breath work. The Chinese believe that certain physical movements, stances, mental concentration and breathing patterns can improve the bodies physical and mental functions. It is based on the theory that the body has different types of energies and that said energies need to be balanced by regular qi gong practice.

Qi gong is an art that requires long-term instruction. From what I've heard, it takes a year or so to understand and benefit from the basics and many more years to perfect. Even more important is finding an instructor who is experienced and qualified to teach the art as there are McDojo qi gong instructors as well.

To cut down on unqualified practitioners in Asia, the Chinese government created a panel to regulate the practice. Qi gong practice in the U.S. isn't regulated. So how do we know if we're getting good qi gong training?

So if the average Joe, like myself, wishes to study qi gong or meditation, how would they be able to make an intelligent decision regarding an instructor?

Boar? Anyone?

It's hard to find a valid instructor here in America. Even in Hong Kong, where my dad learned QiGong before coming to America, it is hard to find a good instructor. I guess you'd have to go and ask around for opinions and such. Good luck .

ALL of the Internal fighting arts REQUIRE oral instruction to compliment the movements if you ever hope to comprehend their meaning. The more "players" involved the easier it is to comprehend a subject. Movement along with a sound "works" better. If you can add a "picture" to the movement and sound it becomes more "substantial" add an application and MAYBE just maybe eventually the idea will take root. Thing is the only applications you can get a beginner see are the ones HE is capable of replicating. This causes people to get a false idea of how Internal arts "work" until they move out of a beginner's level (child level) of understanding. Thing is anyone with 25 years in the internal arts will tell you that they themselves are just a newborn in internal understanding. It is said that until you have white hair in your beard you CAN"T comprehend the internal arts (this assumes you began training as a child) because you have too much muscle and rely on this instead of technique. Now if its that freakin hard to understand things you can see (internal applications) imagine how hard it is to grasp (let alone TEACH) Internal training that has ZERO visible or audible indicators to help you understand what it is you are "feeling.

All our Chi gung is Martial for this reason, we have seated, standing and standing moving meditations. Unless you plan on taking Taiji along with Chi Gong, and unless you plan on investing MAJOR amounts of time and effort in each, take yoga.

Interesting stuff. A friend of mine started last year or so. It coinsided with her going through breastcancer treatments. I think she valued the exercises very much especially since her other MA ventures had to take a back seat for a while (Sparring is just not much fun when you have to worry about that port in oyur chest I guess).

And as usual I need not to worry, I know I won't find any kind of instructor where i live....not even a bad one!

(BTW Taiji ?)

Did the spelling throw you? Tai Chi Chuan is the conventional spelling...or were you questioning Taiji for internal work?

Tai Chi is the more common spelling as far as I am concerned, just wanted to make sure it was what I was thinking!
