If you stay for a year, you'll probably have a blast doing the New Year festival. San shou is mostly thai boxing, with some gong-fu style kicking and throws/sweeps of Chinese wrestling. Like free-style wrestling, the higher throws score the most points (and take the fight out of the other guy).

In my very humble opinion, san shou will give you a realistic fighting base and help you apply your more traditional moves in real-time fighting.

That's ma' 0.02 yuan on the subject.

San Shou would be great. Wushu is utter crap.

Wushu isnt crap. I want to learn wushu for the flexibility, jumping, and complexity. At the same time, sanshou will provide me with realistic sparring and training. Is that not a good combo for me?

San shou is basically kick boxing with throws and take downs. It's very practical stuff, especially if your gym has people that compete. Wu shu has a lot more in common with dancing than it does fighting though. I'm sure it's a good work out; if you don't really care about fighting and you want to demonstrate forms than it might be the right choice for you.

sanshou training should include flexibility training already, most martial arts do. wushu is more of a dance, cultural thing it seems. however, since you can learn em both for a good price then go for it.
