Default getting off the ground

y'know how in movies you see MAs getting off the ground in one fluid motion. how do they do that? is it something you learn in a particular MA? (i'm currently studying thaiboxing - so i probably won't learn it there).

from what i've seen. there's two diff ways. one, where u spin your legs and somehow land on your feet. and the other where you reach behind your shoulders (while still on the ground) and push your self up....

I know what your talking about. The first one to me looks like they just do some crescent kicks and use the weight of their legs to roll over.

The second I can do

I saw Bruce Lee do it and thought it looked cool so I taught myself. You have to be carefull though, Im sure you could injure your back if you did it badly. Its all in the timing. You could always build it up by practising on a bed or trampoline (you can get more bounce and so its easier)

Roll back a bit so your on your shoulders, put your hands behind your head fingers pointing towards your back, bring your legs up straight towards your head then:

Push up with your arms, kick out with your legs and you should be able to land crouching/squatting.

There are a few more ways to get up other than the one everone thinks of...

You are on your back - backward roll. too boring

-My favourite - handstand kicks
-Standard kicks fom the floor
-Jumping kicks from the floor

But those are just a few kicks

You can use any number of technical self defence move to put someone on the floor and get up at the same time. For example...you take you right foor and place it on the floor directly behind their right foot (so that the arch of your foot is touching their heal), then as you stand you push at the front of their shin with the side of your shin. Try it, it hurts.

If you want to be in movies, feel free to go for all that fancy stuff--leave it to martial artists to complicate standing up . If you want to get up without being thrown back down and beaten to a pulp...

How do you get up? Figure it out for yourself. Get up in any way that:
1) Does not compromise your balance
2) Does not compromise your defense
3) Keeps you facing whomever it is that you are fighting
4) Does not require any big weight shifting or leg flailing

This usually means using one hand as a guard and the other to push yourself up--just like you normally get up from the ground.

you should try to get up without using your hands......using an arm to prop you up makes it very easy for someone to kick/stomp and break it....(its not as hard as it sounds to get without any hands...elbows are fine.)

not to mention they could just step on your hand.......

its very easy to practice...just get two other guys, you lay/sit on the ground, then try to get up, while the other two try to stop you.

If your referencing how actors in films get up from a fight, its usually not MA but gymnastics or Wu-Shu that they are using to be all flashy about it.

If someone was to jump up from the floor with the kick to crouch method I would just kick them in the face as they gained their balance...

Like the others said, the best way to get up is in such a way that you are protected and have good balance... it may be boring but gains you more respect from people that know how to fight than the spinning cresent kick of flaying limbs jump would.

Once I saw a guy walking down a street and he was surprised by someone coming out a manhole, so he did a spinning reverse downward kick and missed...
It just made me want to slap him for showing off his flashy arsed non-working bludge, "*SLAP* *SLAP* Whats *SLAP* wrong *SLAP* with *SLAP* just *SLAP* moving out *SLAP* of the *SLAP* way???"

the first one is like a windmill (seen in break dancing) except you don't rotate your legs more then once and you actually get up. The other is called a kip-up and is pretty common. I agree that you shouldn't do these moves in a fight especially against a wrestler since they'd love to get on top of your body and have a wrestling match with you instead. However it's not to say there's no point in learning them, both take alot of muscle control. The kip-up takes quite a good amount of ab contraction to work.

If you do however feel inclined to use these in a real fight I'd say make sure you're distanced well. Getting up from a knockdown in either a way is like a total diss to the other person, it's like saying "Wow is that the best you got?". Also you'd be surprised as to how quick some people can get up using a kip-up especially if you initiate it right after you a break-fall on your back.
