Default why have you stayed/left your martial arts school?

what made you pick the martial arts school(s) that you attend? what qualities in a martial arts school are you looking for?

why have you left a school? also, what has kept you from joining a particular school?

i am extremely loyal to my school, my master and my system. however, i would like to hear some other's stories?

thanks ahead of time for your responses.

An interesting thread, you should re-post it in open access so people see it.

I could use some help finding a Martial Arts school. I've been training with the Bo for years now, but by myself. I want to go to a school and get better, as well as see how other people do under training. Can anyone tell me what styles involve the Bo (even if I knew the styles finding a school would take a long time as well; I can't even find a Fencing school either).

2 Ridiculed
3 Shown something that obviously would not work or
4 Encoraged not to ask questions and to just beleive what was taught.

Also the techniques that were taught had 2 different variations 1 for practice the other for sparring. Why bother learning one way only to discard it and use something else when the fighting starts?Does not make sense and because i and other questioned this we are trouble makers? No we only want to know why we are doing this or that so that we can defend our selves if we have to.

So, basically, you left because everyone thought you were a trouble maker.

My buddy and I decided to do some Jiu-jitsu. Watching Royce Gracie whup up on people with grappling turned me onto it in 1995. I didn't find the time/interest to actually start training until 1998. He picked the Jujutsu school I now attend for one reason: Full Contact was highlighted in the phone book ad.

I started doing some Judo in 2000 because it was complimentary to and compatible with my own art. AND I could get elective credit from the University.

I've dabbled in BJJ a little last year, and finally arranged to train once a week with a Kukuk Blue Belt. I'm hoping to eventually compete in low-level gi events.

Laid back, active minded people. I have no interest in training with the 'my art is the best art' crowd unless it's only to open their eyes to a little dose of harsh reality.

I stopped doing Judo for scheduling reasons. That and the Judo instructor left the valley and was replaced with someone else. I've been hit and miss from BJJ for financial and scheduling reasons.

I have no master and no loyalty beyond my family and close friends. I learn and teach at the school on my own terms. Fortuneatly for me, my terms are relaxed and I'm easy to get along with for the most part. I am third ranked in the school and enjoy my role as comic relief and agent of reality. I am blessed with an excellent Sensei and Sempai who truly enjoy providing me with the occaisional reality checks.

Good thread.
