In one of his books Lee says something about how strengthening the muscles of the neck makes a fighter more resistant to being knocked out?

If this is true I'm very interested in the scientific explanation.

Is unconsciousness simply caused by a sudden violent motion of the head?

And if not...why would a stronger neck make a difference?

Hey guys. I'm new here. For it seems like a while, Ive been interested in training in Jeet Kune Do. Now, I looked up info on it, and that got me even more excited to learn JKD.

Been working out since freshmen year of HS, been wrestling ever since, and have been boxing for 2 years.

I'm about 180 lbs, bench is 275 squats 320 and DL is 345. I'm a kind of big guy(not fat, but no 6 pack). Im pretty flexible, and have quick hands Is this fine for JKD? Basically, I mean, can a bigger guy do this?

Now, I understand JKD is basicaly what you want it to be. A mix of fighting techniques that fit your style. Is this correct?

Im in Las Vegas. So far, Ive only found one place(Las Vegas Kung Fu Academy) that trains in JKD. Anyone know any place else, or can reccomend some place?

Tips/help/advice welcome! Thanks guys.

I was thinking this evening about Bruce Lee's return to the United States in 1959. We're talking about an 18 year old kid who was learning the language and adjusting to a new culture. When I was 18 years old, I was just starting college, trying to get laid on the weekends, boxing at the local gym, playing small forward on the basketball team, and wondering if my car would hold up in the winter months. The moment that an 18 year old Bruce Lee met Jesse Glover, however, he began to demonstrate why he was decades ahead of his time.

1) Many of Bruce Lee's Seattle Era students were 200 plus pounds, so rather than act like a young/stubborn martial artist, he compensated by modifying his beloved Wing Chun.

2) His modifications included the inclusion of the backfist into his fighting method, early experimentations into the concept of interception, and the formulation of Snake Step footwork.

3) Embracing what he called the Fistic Law which basically advocates a singular action to every reaction. In other words, it doesn't matter what your opponent does, your singular technique will neutralize whatever he throws at you.

4) Firing the lead hand before trapping with the rear hand as opposed to the simultaneous hit and trap.

5) Using the principle of non-intention when striking and hitting.

All of this was formulated years before JKD was coined. His genius is sometimes overlooked, but returning to his years in Seattle is a reminder of why he was special.

As time goes by my training is continually changing. Things I stuck by 3 weeks ago are being examined or thrown out completely! Many things taught in JKD are "pattern thinking",whereas fights (or fighting) are real, unpredictable ALIVE things.

If I trained BJJ like most folks train FMA I wouldn't be a very good grappler. I have come to the realization that there is a lot of unnecessary stuff in my teaching, and that I've kept certain things because they "look cool". I would ask that everyone here (who already hasn't) to let go of their inner "Kung Fu nerd" and ask themselves if they're doing things that are really efficient. You will,of course, come to some different conclusions than I did. That's the benifit to living your OWN experiences!

I would like to thank Michael Wright, who with some of his replys and posts has inspired me to live my own martial art experiences. I'd like to thank Burton Richardson and Matt Thornton for inspiring me in the areas of aliveness and personal liberation. I'd like to thank Paul Vunak, for teaching my instructor, and for not caring what anyone thinks of him. To AIKIA (aka Dr Beasley) for conducting some interesting internet forum socialogical experiments.

Be yourself.
