All,
Tell me what you know about Silat. Missed a recent local seminar in it (I think Tjimande style). Is it effective? Don;t know too much about it, but that it is closely related to FMAs since much cross pollination due to proximity. Heard good & bad from different folks. Mariming salamat.

Although some may not consider it traditional silat, if you have the opportunity check out Maphilindo Silat. It is the form of silat created by Guro Dan Inosanto. It is a JKD form of silat that combines several of the best sets of silat into one system. The name Maphilindo comes for the systems he drew from Malasian Philipino and Indonisian forms. During one of his seminars he brought out on of his three ring binders with pictures of his different instructors and explained which areas he gathered from each person.
He teaches the concepts of the systems and gives credit to where he received each area. It also has aspects of Philipino Panantukan (Dirty boxing) which allow it to flow well with other systems such as Jun Fan, Western boxing and Muay Thai. Some of the methods used in the ground fighting and and submissions have help me understand the concepts of BJJ a little better. I was never really as good at BJJ, but the silat curriculm helped me visualize the and understand some of the locks from a standing position and apply it to the ground. Most Jun Fan JKD schools teach some Maphilindo and it is a good way to introduce yourself to some of the different Silat systems. I mentioned this in another thread, but if you are looking for a great overview of the system. Try to get the Late Terry Gibson Silat series. It is a six tape set and hard to find. THe third tape is a full examination of the different variations of the puter kepala. A great series. |
