I am looking for a collapsible baton, not to carry on my person, but to possibly keep in my house or vehicle. I have seen ones as large as 24", but I am looking for something much bigger, since I don't necessarily ever have to wear it on my hip. I am looking for something with a grip as big as a 12" to 14" Mag-Lite (something I can get two-hands on) and extends out to 36" inches of striking surface not including the 12" to 14" handle.

Now, does anybody make anything like this in commercial production already? If yes, are they any good? How much do they cost? Can you provide a link?

If not, does anybody make custom collapsible batons? If yes, are they any good? How much do they cost? Can you provide a link?

If it does, it looks like I am going to have to go custom made- if anybody does that. Can you offer any clues as to who would do work like that?

I just thought of something...if you're not going to carry it, why not just buy a length of pipe from your local plumbing supply store? Something 36" X 1.25"OD(outside diameter).

If it were made out of the right alloy and thick enough ( I never said weight was an issue), why would it have to bend?

A 48" straight baton that does not collapse would take up too much space and could be difficult to manuever out of a car.

The dimensions I suggested in my original post could offer a weapon that could be used closed (a 12"-14" short billy club) and could expand out to something suitable for really long range work. It was just an idea conjured from a desire to have the best of both worlds and having a baton that long would be more consistant with what I have worked with so far in my training.

The longest collapsible baton you'll find is 31" extended. I don't know why you would want something bigger than that for home defense. Think of using a 48" staff in the typical hallway. To each his own, I guess...

I only have one 5' x 5' square "hall" and the staircase where a 4' staff would be difficult to maneuver. The rest of the rooms in my condo are more than big enough for lateral strikes and thrusts with something 4' long. In those few tighter places, the unexpanded baton 12" to 14" would be fine. Outside of a car,it doesn't matter how long it gets, because you are in the wide open.

I think that my lack of familiarity working with a shorter stick drives me as well to look for something this long. If your experience involves some work with a 4' staff and sword, you look for 4' sticks in your environment. If you train FMA, which I don't-but I respect it, you will likely be more comfortable with the shorter baton available on the market.

Well, we all know it isn't going to weigh 40lbs. If the 31" one weighs 24ozs. , why would I assume that a 48" model would be as heavy as a barbell?

I have to say, that I have remained polite and explained myself, yet the responses I'm getting are "is this a joke", "roll eyes", "you need to just get this or that". If you don't want to answer the question I'm asking, move on to another thread. I don't see the need for the attitude.

I wouldn't begin to tell you what you can or can't do or what you need to defend yourself. I suppose I could start practicing with a shorter baton, but I asked a simple friendly question about an alternative that might not bring my training back to square-1. If you trained with 4' staff and knew how to strike and grapple with it, why wield a weapon that you'd only know how to club with? While I believe in the right to own firearms and knives, maybe they aren't ideal in my current living situation/housemates.

Now I've explained myself yet again, the why's and the how's. May we please keep the posts on this thread to those that actually answer my questions and not turn this into a "let me tell you........" type thing or a "dude, you're a moron" type response?

Who has not been polite. Your question was already aswered by other posts. Basically what you are asking rejects the resaon for "expanded" baton. I work as a bouncer and I have 3 types of batons

1 7" expands to 17"
2. 8" that expands to 21" of these one has a foam handle and one is all steel with knarled grip(best one-also one I cannot find anywhere)

I think the responses (or at least mine) is from confusion. Why do you even need an expandable baton if it only going to be in your house, like someone said get a pipe, full baton, gun or knife for your protection. in your car a 7 inch expandable is more than enough

I can understand this point at least for the gun, but let your house mates know that can't have "non violent" protection. you won't have the option of being polite. I hope this never happens to you of course but you may want to ask what are you supposed to do if someone breaks into your house at that point they probably would wish you had the gun or knife.

Regarding the training you are correct learn to handle the smaller weapon I think you will find it quite effective.

I rolled my eyes about the "weight" becuase no one brought up the issue of weight.
