Default How to use the umbrella as a weapon

In lieu of my quest for training with improvised weaponary, I recently bought a 32 inch umbrella with a metal tip at the bottom and a hardwood hook-handle. I've found that this innocuous object is incredibly efficient as a tool of self-preservation.

In regards to gripping the umbrella, I like to hold it in the classic Fairbairn stick grip...with one hand gripping underhand and the other hand gripping overhand. I've also tried the classic Arnis one-handed grip, using the hardwood handle as the striking surface of the umbrella. However, I find that this grip isn't very practical, since the umbrella is not strong enough to be wielded in such a standard Filipino Arnis way. Such swinging might cause the umbrella to break easily, so I feel that the two-handed Fairbairn grip gives much more stability and control to the umbrella. However, I do not rule out the use of the standard one-handed Filipino grip entirely. I've found that it's efficient for impact disarms and for hooking the weapon-bearing hand with the hardwood handle.

I like to strike with the umbrella in a way similar to that of a bayonet. The metal tip acts as the blade while the hardwood handle acts as the butt-stock. I can also use the center (aka "bar") of the umbrella to strike upwards into the chin or throat area.

Here are some links I found:

http://www.gutterfighting.org/fstick.html
http://www.urbancombatives.com (go to the "Movies" section...go to the bottom where it says "Dennis Martin/BCA training clips"...then scroll all the way down...you'll see a video of the Fairbairn stick strikes)

In terms of target selection, I prefer to aim for the joints, the groin, and solar plexus with the thrust of the metal tip. I would only strike vital areas (eyes, throat) only if my life were on the line.

If any of you have any other tips you could share with me in regards on how to use the umbrella, feel free to leave something. I could always use some advice.

Happy training!
