So what's a cheap, heavy stick to use to practice with? I am thinking of getting two wooden bats and that way if I need to add weight, I can just put one of those weights that go around the tip (like they use in the majors). Any other suggestions or peoples particular favorites.

I currently use a long(35 plus inches) fiberglass-fashioned handle for sledgehammer.
To alternate with, I also use a 14"length x 3/4"width steel rod. I use both types that help isolate certain details in the techniques/angles of attack I practice to assist in developing power and proper form and execution. I'll still go for using the baseball bats also. It wouldn't hurt to try. Gago!
