Question learning fma

today at work i saw a group of guys wearing fma shirts come in. i asked one of em about their training, and he said it was only for selected people. my question is, are most fma groups like this? i dont know much about fma, but my understanding is that these arts are mostly handed down from generation to generation, is this correct? and do most fma practitioners keep pretty much keep their art to themselves? this guy seemed reall reluctant to talk about his art and his group despite wearing his fma shirt to show his school emblem. i dont know what the deal was. any insight?

Default Or not...

yes... some traditional eskrimadors and Pentjakers are secretive about teaching techniques of the style and prefer to remain covert or unrecognized. Many are selective as to who they will teach techniques to... There are standards of conduct, morality and heart to be met before you will be considered "worthy" of a particular system by SOME masters. However all that would go out the door by wearing a LOGO of your style on your clothing...
