Default Sikaran?

Hey guys. In my attempt to learn more about the FMAs, I have become interested in the FMA art of Sikaran (Filipino kicking)

I've been looking at Sikaran clips on Youtube and most of it looks like Tae Kwon Do...the postures, the delivery system, and even the uniforms. Did Sikaran always look like this?

I was wondering there were any Sikaran guys on this board who could share their training tips and any advice with me. I was recently given a heavy bag stand as a gift...and using an old heavy bag I got a few years back, I set it up and I've just been looking for a new way to include FMA empty hands into my workouts. I have some exposure to Sikaran, but not as much as I'd like.

Thanks,
Mike

hello,

sikaran was a game kinda like king of the hill with kicking. the idea was to push the "king" out of the circle. it was not regarded as a martial art, thought it is likely many that played were trained in combatives.

anyway, the kicks used were basically what thai would call "teep". a straight, jab-like kick and leg sweeps/trips. mostly kids played it, but a long time ago, the farmhands played it to kill time and unwind.

as far as this current sikaran? as far back as the eighties it looks like this (admittedly had not heard of sikaran as a martial art prior to this time). likely some taekwondo influence. karate was really big back in the 60's and 70's. current sikaran might even have some savate elements. as far as kicking arts go, it's alright. some adaptations will be necessary depending on your occupation (mma fighter, or grappler, or bodyguard, etc.).

as far as training tips... if you are just starting.... listen to the instructor...

thats about it. have fun with it!!

thanks

Fist DAMAG-INC Pananjakman Demo clip, summer 2007

In our street clothes, Myself and Caleb are seen under the carport at Bizkit's house in Houston, practicing low-line kicking to the lower limbs of the opponent to offset balance or for destruction and other practical means to finish a violent encounter in the streets.

I used the generic term, "Pananjakman" as my preferred umbrella term for kicking skills in Kali. All other FMA terms from whatever region that speaks a different dialect also apply. A kick is a kick after all....
