Default Using Pens to fight off attackers

Guys,

I heard someone has developed a system to use pens to defend themselves and its based on Kali. Can someone point me to a sifu who teaches this. Or maybe there are books on it.

Thanks,

I’m not familiar with a specific individual specialising in the use of a pen, but this isn’t new ground, and they certainly haven’t developed this method. This isn’t based on Kali, this is Kali. It is one of the most basic concepts in Filipino Martial Arts, utilise any weapon be that traditional, improvised, or your own natural tools to destroy any attacking limb. This is done with stick, sword, dagger, shield, elbows, knees etc etc. Perhaps what this person’s method has borrowed most closely from is the palm stick. I haven’t seen this system so won’t judge it, but my guess is the concepts and movements of the palm stick method have been duplicated, only holding a pen as the weapon of choice. This isn’t new ground, its fairly common here in the UK due to the tight restrictions on carrying any form of weapon, many Kali students carry pens as a potential equaliser and have done for a long time.

To see an easily accessible example of the concept, just watch the core fight scene in the Bourne Identity, the concepts given to the actors and choreographers were taken from Inosanto/Lacoste and Sayoc Kali.

My DVD - "The Essential Ray Floro" - touches on using not only pens, but also other improvised weapons such as plastic drink bottles and magazines as defence weapons

Hi Ray,

Can i purchase this DVD

Thanks everyone for your advice. I need a fighting system that can use weapons such as pens to defend. This allow me to carry pens in all my pockets and unleash them when i get attacked by criminals.

I've got to be honest fella, that really doesn't strike me as the most solid self-protection strategy I have ever heard. Criminals carry weapons too, and I'll wager you they will be a lot more serious than a pen.

Where do you live? What sort of lifestyle are you leading that fills you with such certainty of your impending attack by criminals? Self-protection starts way back down the road, with good awareness, avoidance and confrontational skills. If you are expecting the shit to hit the fan any time soon, I'd be very nervous entrusting your life to a ballpoint pen. Personally, I would rather have a solid base of effective empty hand training and conditioning, at the very least some good cardio to get the fck out of there.

Be careful looking for easy options and trends, such as pen fighting. If I got into a ruck tomorrow and the guy pulled a pen on me, I have to be honest that it really wouldn't concern me much, even if he had watched one of Ray Floro's much promoted DVDs

Just to clarify, I haven't seen Ray's DVDs and that was just a tongue n cheek remark, they may be very good. My point wasn't about Ray's DVDs, my point was your thinking behind self-protection. Just to make that clear.

Have a good Christmas.

Ray,

Please excuse my words i never intended to mean your DVD is a waste of time. I respect you as a trained figher and what you teach i am sure adds value to all who come to you to learn.

I meant to say i shouldnt rely soley on your pen technique for defense

Thanks,

K

Hey guys,

I know you have already mentioned this Mike Brewer and Michael Wright but I wanted to second what you both said. The "pen" fighting is nothing new just another improvised weapon that is used in FMA. My first JKD/Kali instructor would teach a lot of knife work to the local police and military and then would teach pretty much the same material using things that people usually have on them or within reach of them. He would show disarms and locks using handkerchiefs... then show knife work using ink pens, and stick work using vhs tapes and rolled up news papers and magazines. That is what is so cool about the FMA's... you can make anything a weapon and not have to change it up to much to be effective.

Merry Christmas everyone... and I hope you all have a Blessed New Year.

Tim
