I've read that many martial arts (fma, cma, even ninjutsu stylists and american CIA as well) have techniques for flexible weapons.. when i first heard about this I thought "Oh, yeah, please, don't come after me with a towel..whatever WILL I do if you rat tail me to death(sarcasm)".. then I read they use the weapon as a third arm to tie up the opponent while fighting, and was exposed to only a couple of ideas aobut how this could be done.. though it was only a couple of examples, they were really interesting and creative.. and it leads me to ask if any of you know any flexible weapon techniques, or have been exposed to someone demonstrating it (or have a resource you'd like to recommend for learning)..
thanks

The majority of what I have came from the Cipecut Silat system (which is one of the systems drawn from in Mande Muda Silat). Many people have the same reaction you mention. For this reason, I use the sarong (the training tool traditionally used in Cipecut) for demonstration of a concept. Then I show how it can be applied with a towel or a jacket or a purse strap or some other item which fits into our mode of dress in America. I can't tell you how many times I've heard, "That's cool ... but I don't wear a sarong in public." Here's a couple of simple techniques: 1) You're at the beach and you've got a towel on your shoulder (one shoulder, not around your neck). A guy punches, you get to a standard puter kepala (hopefully you're familiar with this term) via whatever means you like, but as his head passes in front of you, use your hand that's not on his head to grab the towel and tuck his face/throat into it. Then take the hand that was on his head and grab the other end of the towel. Now you've got a choke or throw (hopefully this made some amount of sense :-). 2) A guy punches at you and he's wearing an open jacket or an untucked long t-shirt. Parry the punch and slap him in the groin. Grab the bottom of his jacket/shirt, and pull it up and over the outside of his arm. Now you've got his arm trapped in his own clothing. If he fires his other hand, parry it down, and do a standard cross-arm trap (without letting go of the shirt/jacket). Now you should have his arms crossed and tied up and you'll have a very easy straight arm bar. Pak Herman Suwanda had a video out (from his Mande Muda series) on Sarong techniques that was pretty good. I don't know if it's still available but if you can track it down it might give you something to go on. Another option (shameless plug) would be to bring my instructor in for a workshop on this :-) Regards, Mike |
