Please post your thoughts on Sayoc Kali (if you have had a chance to train in the style or gone to a seminar). Have read quite a bit on the web about the style & am intrigued. Called a nearby instruct & was amazed by the price ($50 per lesson)...I guess I'm cheap(& military) but that seems a little high to me......Is it worth it? I do love the FMAs though & am open to anything good. Thanks.

Hello,

I have been training in Sayoc Kali with Tuhon Sayoc, and a variety of Guros over the last 2 1/2 years or so. I haven't looked back once since I started. Tuhon is a wealth of information on the art of the blade as well as stick and other Filipino Martial Arts. Where are you located and looking to train? I'll try and help you find an instructor.

50 BUCKS A LESSON! Thats a bit dear. If I was you I'd try to haggle it down, the phillopino MA systems are great and I'd reccomend them if youve got the money.

Hello All,

Verzejd, have you checked all the Instructors, and Associate Instructors listed on the Sayoc.com site in your area? Their prices will vary. Was the cost a group class or a one on one private lesson?

Hi,

50 dollars for an hour private is decent. If its for a group lesson, save your money. I doubt it would be for groups because that would be outrageous. I don't know much about Sayoc Kali just that its a blade based art. They also have some cool video clips on there website. Good luck on your training!

Hi,

First off, ask the instructor if you can tape your private. Most schools allow this because its your private lesson. If he/she says yes, then yes, it is very worth it because you will get all the materials that was taught that day. If he/she says no, then I don't think it'll be worth it unless your have photographic memory. Hope that answers your question.

You won't be able to tape that personal lesson if the material you're going to be going over is Sayoc Kali. There are only two or three people in the Sayoc family who are allowed to video tape Sayoc material. At least, this is what I've been told.

Taping privates (if it's allowed) is an awsome method of taking notes on the privates.

But ... to say that it's not worth it is, IMHO, a bit extreme.

With my instructors, an hour private is usually as beneficial as an entire month of group classes. The hands-on training with the instructor tends to put the material more directly into my body. It may take my mind a while to catch up. But, personally, I feel that (assuming the instructor is good and the student is dedicated) the material that goes directly into your body + whatever you mentally remember + your written notes (which I've never heard of anyone disallowing) + any notes the instructor gives (some instructors have a set batch of standard notes that can accompany a private) is *well* worth the money and time.

For the first year that I trained with my instructor, I lived 150 miles from him. I was only able to train one day a week (on Saturdays). By taking one private each month, I was able to keep up with the rest of the class that were able to attend 2-3 classes / week.

Hello Everyone,

Here to clear up a few myths...

I have taped almost all of my private instruction with various instructors.
(ERN-Dog)When I first went to Tuhon Sayoc's home for a private he told me to bring my video camera! He also allows all Instructors to film various seminars etc for their training use.

When I have privates, I offer to film or they can bring a camera in to film the class. The student is paying for a compact class focusing on their needs and development usually on specific material, and in that sense privates are worth the cost. If you are trying to push past a plateau in your training a private lesson(s) can help do the trick.
