Default Doce Pares Grandmaster

Hi,

We've got a guy in Newcastle, UK, advertising Richard Bustillo as the ONLY Doce Pares Grandmaster outside of the Phillipines!!!

We have GM Danny Guba in the UK, so who else around the globe is a GM in Doce Pares?

The politics in Doce Pares get quite involved. I don't have the time or energy for it. I just try to spar with GM Cacoy and tune the rest of it out. And if I have enough energy to argue then I know I haven't worked hard enough.

Default DP Politics

Hi Terry,

Trust me, I know about the politics within DP!!!!

Knowing that GM Bustillo is _NOT_ the only GM outside the PI, I am curious as to who else is.

Well, as far as fighting skill, Cacoy's top guys in the U.S. it would be:

Junior Cataverio (San Jose, CA) (lived in Cebu and trained for years at DP)

Ted Cetello (San Jose) (45+ pro boxing fights & powerlifter & Muay Thai coach)

Ron Lew (San Jose) (great technician and teacher, not a head banger though)

Anthony Klemens (L.A.) (Australian Muay Thai, good fight record too. And the guy's like 6'5", yikes!)

Chris Petrilli (Arizona somewhere) (former special forces and roomate w/ Burt Richardson. He's one of the only people that garner the difference between Eskrido and Eskrilat. (shhhh, don't tell the children.))

I don't know much about the ranking stuff. I worry about what it feels like then they hit up upside the head. Whack!!! (Cacoy gives out ranks these days, but he is also in his mid-80s--perhaps at the end of his life--and would like the art to survive him. I do not fault the man for it.) And these guys are awesome.

Two of Mano Cacoy's more senior U.S. students have a substantial amount of pentjak silat training under their belts. They both like to throw, but most of the clan doesn't garner the difference between these lines and the judo/jujutsu/aikido-based throwing that Mano Cacoy does. They also don't publicise this, which was what I meant by 'don't tell the children'.

Mano Cacoy sees it and encourages it. Fighters adapt, and he's a fighter. In fact, Mano Cacoy likes to study other styles through sparring with people trained in those systems.

Default Missed one master/What is the purpose of the question?

Hi Terry,

You listed a number of wonderful masters-I've met all of them and have high regards for all of them...

However, I must recognize my instructor, Master Narrie Babao (San Diego)...he too is an 8th Grade Guro (Master) under GM Cacoy Canete and has been since 1980...he had early "Classic Escrima" matches that were similar to how the Dog Bros. train...minimal protection worn...he is considered the Grandfather of Filipino Martial Arts in San Diego and an original member of the Kali Association of America...

In regard to Bill Lowery, why do you care?...GM Richard Bustillo was promoted by GM Cacoy Canete to 9th Grade Guro...we are Doce Pares Federation...GM Dionisio Canete is with Doce Pares International-a multi-style system...we are progressive and they are traditional...nothing more...I have met GM Dionisio Canete through Master Babao (they are still friends over the years) and he was humble and friendly...could it be that GM Dionisio Canete promoted GM Danny Guba within the Doce Pares International system?

Questions like that only serve to create division....if you know the politics of the situation, then why do you ask?...are you sore that GM Canete promoted Andy Gibney to 6th Grade Guro (Master)-anyone who can read knows of your disdain for him..if that is the case, please keep your probing questions within that scope before you offend someone...

My regards.

Romeo C. De Los Reyes

Default Clarification

As a point of clarification....

Master Babao started training under GM Cacoy Canete in 1980...he was promoted to 8th Grade Guro in 1997 or 1998...

Sorry for the misinformation...

You are absolutely right. Please excuse the oversight, and convey my respects to Master Narrie.

Default Hello Romeo

Hello again Romeo,

Once again, go back and read what I wrote. Heres a comment I made to John U Sy Jnr:

>Thank you for the information. A number of people have read my post incorrectly and are assuming I am attacking GM Bustillo. This is not the case. I was simply trying to get more information concerning other GM's now that my own instructor (Danny Guba) has been elevated to the rank of GM.<

Danny was promoted by GM Diony Canete, Richard Bustillo by GM Cacoy Canete. No problem, no question about legitimacy. The question was designed to gain information.

I, and others in the UK, appreciate the paranoia which inhibits so much of Martial Arts today, and we find it is more divisive than any amount of questions.

So at 6th degree BB a practitioner can call themselves Master (now thats interesting - not in any sarcastic sense, genuinely interesting), and at 9th degree BB they can be called GM. More information, more knowledge about the system I am studying.

Lets keep asking questions and getting answers, lets allow the paranoid their space.

Bill

Hi Bill,

Yes, it did appear that you were attacking GM Bustillo in your post...that point is settled...

Paranoid is not a term I would use to describe the divisiveness among any of the martial arts...that oversimplifies deeper issues--but if that is an easy way to digest it, then have at it...

I'm sure that GM Guba and Guro Richard Hudson could have answered your question...I doubt that the question posed required an internet response--you have a lot of resources in the UK...

In the end, aren't we all just training to be able to defend ourselves, defend our family and friends?...

Just my thoughts...
