Maestro Rico Acosta will be holding a seminar in NYC.

Kuntaw Kali Kruzada - "A Comparative Analysis in Executing the Art of the Blade"

The seminar will link the respective styles of Grandmaster Mena, Grandmaster Picate, and Grandmaster Pallorina, whom Maestro Rico has studied personally under in the Philippines.

This is a rare opportunity to experience some of the most notable styles taught in the Philippines first hand.

Pretty interesting. What is the difference in the style? Is it because on the name, Kali/arnis/escrima? Sorry for my ignorance. I have only been studying martial arts(karate) for a short time.

I am assuming that you are curious about the differences between the styles, from which many of the techniques will be derived, for comparison in our seminar.

Grandmaster Mena's –Doblete Rapelon is mainly a single weapon art, whose techniques are best executed with a bladed weapon. His style's focus is on the use of short repetetive strikes (Doblete) to the attackers limbs and/or body, meant to be executed in rapid succesion without any gaps in defense or offense. One may execute four to six strikes for every one single strike that is initiated by an opponent. Doblete Rapelon also contains techniques with Espada Y Daga, Doble Baston/Itak, Baraw, Bangkaw, and Mano Mano mixed with COMJUKA.

Grandmaster Pallorina's –W.E.D.O. Combat Arnis, is an acronym for War (of) Eskrimador Death (of) Offensive. W.E.D.O. utilizes many unorthodox Medium/Short range counters that are similar in theory, but not execution, to Doblete Rapelon. There are no weapon to weapon blocks, instead the attacking limb is intercepted by the blade (as in Doblete Rapelon), and counter strikes to vital areas on the body are executed in rapid succesion. Unlike Doblete Rapelon however, which favors long range fighting, W.E.D.O. is better suited for Medium range as the opponents weapon is checked and trapped many times between counter attacks.

Grandmaster Picate's –Picate Style Crossada Espada Y Daga, is obviously a sword and dagger based style which is also very effective in (but not limited to) Medium range. The method of defense is to intercept the attack with both the Sword and Dagger, simultaneously blocking and cutting the offending limb in one single movement with precise counter attacks with both the sword and dagger to vital areas of the body.

I hope I have answered your question aptly. One of the main goals of our organization is to preserve and promote the techniques, training methodologies, and standards of the FMA as they are taught in the Philippines; bringing increased notoriety to the Grandmasters and Masters (both living and deceased) who have shared their wealth of knowledge with us. We are indebted to them and the Philippines from which so much has been taken, but so little credit has been given.

You are obviously interested in the FMA. All styles of Filipino Martial Arts are very effective and in some way or another share a basic commonality, as well as a common history. You could say that we are all like cousins if not brothers.

The FMA looks very interesting. I do appriciate that your school wants to Unite other styles in the FMA. Hopefully one day I can come out and visit your school. I see you have schools in cali, florida, NY, and NJ. Do you have any schools out here in Chicago?

We do not have any representatives in Chicago presently, but I'm sure that you will be able to find another FMA group down there. Unfortunately many FMA schools do not advertise, or have yellow page listings. Perhaps you should look for a Jeet Kune Do Concepts school, they usually have a listing.

I am glad that you are interested in studying Arnis/Eskrima. You will find it to be a very practical and effective art.

Do you offer any instructional video tapes representing the styles that will be taught at the seminar? If so, I'd like to take a look at one before I attend the seminar. I have heard of Doblete Rappelon but not the other two. Are they new styles?

Also, how may I go about getting tickets in advance?

We do not currently have any tapes, covering the aforementioned styles, that are for sale. We do have video footage of Grandmaster Picate, and Grandmaster Mena and will be releasing a video, sometime in the near future, that features many prominent Masters and Grandmasters in the Philippines.

We will be taping the seminar and may release a video on the material covered in Winter 2003.

Also Lao-Lan, and Picate Style Crossada Espada Y Daga are not new styles. Grandmaster Villanueva, and Grandmaster Picate have been teaching these arts in the Philippines for as long as Grandmaster Mena has.

To give you some perspective Grandmaster Mena was the first to open a public arnis school in Manila.
