Hmmmm, I have studied quiet a few different arts, Karate, jujitsu, Western boxing, Kickboxing, Thai boxing, Jeetkunedo and Arnis and I have never been asked to sign a contract. Is this place a gym as well? I would think and read very carefully before signing. Over here in the UK this is an uncommon practice

Contracts suck I know, but it is just away of a school having an idea or gaurantee off how much money will be coming in.
I checked out my local area schools and the best location dealt with contracts. Don't be scared though,I was and this school actually had the best overall rate and no initiation fees as well, the non contract schools did. The only thing that sucks is what you sign for is what you are obligated to pay. Put in a stipulation that if you are injured or become sick that you may opt out,and of course if the school goes out of business as well.
