I'm new to the forums but not to martial arts. For the past while, most of my time has been spent running for cross-country but now i want to start working out the rest of my body. The bottom line is that I want to be stronger and faster. I've been doing sets of pushups, pullups, chinups, punches with dumbells, and ab workouts (I like body weight workouts for some reason) but I don't know much about how the workouts are supposed to go. If I have the whole day should I spread the sets out over the whole day and work for more reps per set or should I do them all at once with one or two minutes rests between sets? For punches, should I go fast or slow? Slow taxes muscles more but feels like it's doing more.
Any advice is appreciated and if you suggest things about my pullups or chinups please specify which you're talking about in terms of overhand or underhand because I've been confused as to which is which (always thought chinups were overhand). also what about doing a set of pushup, then a set of pullup, then an ab workout, then back to pushups? What is the best way to plan your sets? |

i think its better to work on 1 muscle group at a time. the idea is to tire that muscle to the point were microtears are created in the muscle, which make it sore the next day. the soreness is what will make ur muscles stronger. in order to do this u need to spend some time on each muscle group. do like a bunch of sets of pushups one after another with only a min or two in between each set. do them slowly in good form until ur muscles cant do anymore. after u do some sets on 1 group, and u feel that muscle group cant do anymore, then move on to the next.
mixing them up is good if u are doing more of a cardio type workout. like if u just finished running, u can do a set of pushups, then a set of abs, and so on. the point is u are keeping ur body in motion and keeping ur heartrate up. chinups are overhand and work ur back more. pullups are underhand and work ur back and biceps. |

also, I've heard reverse pyramids like going less and less weight with more and more reps is good for actual muscle size, so what would regular pyramids with more weight, less reps be good for? real strength or endurance?

u might not wanna punch with weights too fast, u might injure uself. go as fast as u are able to be in full control of the movement at all times. all punching with weights really does is build up ur shoulders and help u remember to roll ur punches.
as for the regular pyramid, thing, its main goal is to build strength. |
