Default Newb to Skipping - Help Please

Hi all...

I'm new to skipping ... I've always avoided it [whenever they did skipping, i'd do criss-cross jumps (dunno the actual term for them)...

But now, I wanna learn how to skip ... and I SUCK at it. If there's any tips any of you can give, I'd greatly appreciate it...

Also ... I wanna buy a good skipping rope for a beginner like myself... are there diff. kinds of ropes (weighted, lengths, etc.) ... and which one would be best for my situation [I'm 5'6, 150lbs] ...

THANKS every1.

You haven't really specified what exactly the problem is, so I'll take a swipe at a general approach.

if you're not good at it right off the bat, it just comes with time from what I've seen.

try to get as many jumps in as you can the first time, and then try to beat your own record. Jump LOW, just enough for the rope to get through and keep your legs relatively straight (but not locking out the knee.. it should feel comfortable and natural). Keep your hands at waist level close to your body and turn them at the wrist to spin the rope.

Don't try to do the one-foot-fancy-boxer-type jumps just now, keep both feet on the ground and try and get as many jumps in as you can without tripping. The fancy stuff will come in time when you know the rhythm and how to play within it.

Hope that helps.

Oh, and for the rope, I use a weighted rope cuz I think it's easier to achieve a good rhythm with minimal turning effort (good ol gravity), for the length, I think the rule is that if you stand on the middle of the rope and bring the handles up, they should be reaching somewhere around your chest area....

but any rope is better than no rope

get a pastic rope rather than a real rope one, as its built for speed and they can be quite heavy.

It simply takes time to get good, just practice.
