Default Rocky Marciano and his training...?

Hey, I was reading in an article about pullups, it said Rocky Marciano (the boxing champ) would do "hundreds of pullups a day," according to old training logs. My question is, in this day of "Don't train to failure at all, don't even come close accept once a week," how did the man do hundreds a day without burning himself out?

Rocky was a beast in and of himself, and I figure he might've done those pullups similar to Pavel's idea of "greasing the groove". He'd probably do a good bit of pullups every now and then throughout the day in different sets, never to the point of getting tired. He definitely did have a killer regimen though, with iron-clad discipline to train every day no matter what.
