Hey I think I may have had the same thing as you not so long ago (about a month). I had aching pains in the inside of my shins whenever I ran and felt bruised whenever I pressed against the area. Im not sure if this was shin splints but it never caused em a problem and just left after a couple of weeks. So I wouldnt worry if you have the same problem as me but if it persists or becomes too painful, see a doctor. I was still able to train all the way through it so I dont know if we had the same condition.

1) Stretch - Sit on the floor (like muslims pray), where your shins are on the floor and your feet are under your butt. Lean back slightly until you feel your shin muscles stretching.

2) Ice - Apply ice packs to your shins for 20 mins about 3-4 times a day.

3) Rest - It's recommended not to do any running, etc... until the pain is gone. Other's say you can work through them...I've never been able to do it.

The best solution is prevention.

1) Go to RunnersWorld.com, and do their wet test (RunnersWorld.com > Shoes & Gear > Shoes 101...Read "Pronation Explained" and "What's your foot type"). Doing this will help you determine if you underpronate, neutral or overpronate when you run.

2) Get the appropriate running shoes (they will recommend some shoes) for your type of pronation and build you have. Heavier people (I'm 6' 2" - 205 lbs) should get a more cushioned shoe to support the impact.

I've struggled with Shin splits most of my life. I have a high arch and I underpronate. I purchased a recommended shoe (Asics Gel 1100) for my pronation and my weight I haven't had any problems with shin splints since.
