I recently quit smoking, does anyone know how much it really affects your stamina and breathing? Does anyone know any smokers, or retired smokers that just seem to have endless stamina? I have a lot of stamina and endurance but I wonder how much better I would be had I never smoked. Im glad I quit!

why did you give up? smoking is really, really nice. i dont let myself do it often because it kills my fitness, but its lovely nevertheless. got to the stage of coughing up nasty s**t yet? |

I've been at the coughing up lung butter stage since I was about 7. I've always had crappy lungs, but it really dosen't affect my stamina. I smoke about 2 or 3 packs a week. Buying lights helps...cept you smoke more of them lol. The closest I ever got to quitting was when I was 17 and I had someone buy me a pack of cigarettes and I didn't tell them what I wanted, they gave me newport menthol kings....ughhh....oh man....but the horrible thing was I still smoked that whole pack, LOL.
Smoking has never changed my overall stamina. Maybe when I'm 30 it will.

I used to smoke two packs a day and I told my doctor that It had no effect on my Breathing. He said that just because I had conditioned my lungs to operate twice as hard because of their diminished capacity, didn't mean that I wasn't harming them. It made alot of sense.
I've had and quit alot of bad habbits, but smoking is definately the hardest. |

Well thanks for the advice, that was my theory, I will just train my lungs 10 times as hard if i have too. I never smoked more than half a pack a day and that was rare, I usually smoked less than 5. I'm not too bad off, I do have a lot of endurance and stamina but I am about to get into school for BBJ and Muay Thai I don't want a bunch of younger students out lasting me and kicking the crap out of me, but I'm only 21 so I have a while to train.

They will if you smoke, I have had 30 students quit smoking after their first week of class and never go back to it.
Nothing like handicapping yourself from the beginning.

and if you smoke less than 5 a day now, that will gradually increase. you think everyone that smokes a couple packs a day started smoking that much from the beginning? they all started like you smoking little by little and gradually that craving increased. better to quit while you still can. |

I smoked for about 10 years at the worst it was probably a pack a day. I never really noticed the effects until I was swimming after having quit for a while, I could hold my breath for nearly double the time. Thats the only thing I really noticed from it. During the time I smoked I skateboarded all day every day so I never really had problems with cardio. But I did notice after quitting I put on about 15 lbs.
It seems to happen to a lot of people though. Not sure why this is, I myself never had a problem quitting but a good mental aid for a lot of people was chewing gum whenever they got the urge to smoke. It helped some friends of mine. |
