I used to be All into Strict eating, I would buy Twinlab, chicken breasts.. and then I finally said, what the heck am I doing all this for, so now I just follow a reasonable diet and eat the foods I enjoy eating. I am not trying to be some metrosexual fag who needs to have 2%bodyfat all the time. I train at a Muay Thai/Boxing gym, the last thing I want to be is some pretty boy so some rough beasts can pound me, lol.

My sense is that lots of people around the world drink their coffee and tea black (or green, as it were). Just not as common in the US, where otherwise healthy drinks need to be turned into a creamy sugary snack treat. But your point is taken, if I had to drink it w/ cream or sugar, I'd rather drop it completely. |

To compare to a processed-food diet (not suggesting you eat that way!): In a lot of ways, eating natural isn't so strict -- I can eat anything nature provides. Everything in the produce section, almost everything in the butcher section, many of the items in the dairy section, whole grains, almost everything at my local farmer's market. Once you make the transition, it is not "strict" (though the transition from chemical food to real food itself can be difficult). Moreover, too many people make the mistake of thinking that eating "healthy" means eating chicken and brown rice every day. A food diet should be better than a processed-food diet, IMO. The eggs sauteed with spinach, onions, and mushrooms I had for breakfast taste way better to me than some processed/extruded grain flakes from a box. Ditto the grass-fed beef sirloin steak and roasted artichokes and giant bowl of local-grown cherries for dessert, better than most of the junk before I switched to real food. For me, it isn't about a metrosexual desire to be 2% bf, it's that eating this type of food really makes me feel better, it's healthier, and tastes way WAY better than the processed junk I used to eat. It feels "strict" at first because you don't have many recipes, so your choices are limited until you develop more options (versus processed food, where I can always get a new flavor of TV dinner). Now that I've figured out how to cook all this stuff, and also have recipes for when I'm limited on time, it's easy. I would never have transitioned if Twinlab and chicken breasts were a big part of my definition of a healthy diet. |

And what's so wrong with that - provided they aren't manboobs?PS - been breaking bread with some Marines at the galley. You guys seem to eat healthier than others. I'm seeing tall plates of greens, sprouts, veges and stuff.

Tom, you can't go wrong eating lots of meat, vegetables (esp. greens), nuts and seeds, and some starches and sugars. Make sure you're getting at least some non-fruit/veggie carbs; don't want to deplete your glycogen stores... Which I have a funny story about btw.
If you're eating a lot of grains presoaking them to get rid of the phytic acid is a good idea. And since you're probably somewhat stressed out make sure you're getting as much sleep as you can, clean water and lots of B vitamins, magnesium and zinc. Are you having trouble getting enough calories in? Coconut milk is the answer. Mmm, Thai food. Someone has to tell me how to use my hand-me-down Foreman grill. GQChris, Emergen-C is a better choice than Pedialyte for electrolytes...just look at the awful ingredients in pedialyte. The Emergen-C people make an electrolyte mix too. And you can get Emergen-C light with no sugar. |

Oh yeah as far as supplements, I think the evidence for the benefits of cod liver oil or fish oil is pretty much indisputable.
I sometimes supplement with zinc, vit C or B vitamins depending on what my body needs...but I agree with trying to get most of one's nutrients from vitamin and mineral-rich food... |

Hey!Nutrition is hugely important in my life. Fresh fruit and veges and leane red meat. Lots of fish and turkey for protein. My body is a temple and I need to treat it right to keep my insides healthy.

Optimum Nutrition's whey protein has always been on the top of the bodybuilding supplement list, and for obvious reasons. I ordered myself a 5lb tub of it and it was the best I ever had.

guys i talked to a nutritionist on many occasions, and the sugar thing isnt a bad thing, as long as its done in moderation, and usually after a workout. it helps give your body back some of the things its missing, expecially after a really hard hard muscular workout.
i know that wont be a popular statement, but its true. the thing that i tell my fighters is to remember moderation. we all get together and have a drink or two sometimes (like 1 time every 2 months) and that helps keep the dojo like a family instead of a place to just go workout. also the so called junk food. when im on a very good diet i try to have at least a cheat day or two in the week somewhere. again i practice moderation, i dont have a large pizza, and icecream if you know what i mean lol. it works, and keeps you from wanting to purge or pig out on some junk food or chocolate when you went without for so long. |
