Best investment in fitness education you'll ever make. Get Infinite Intensity if you want to take a multi-faceted approach to fitness (weights, bodyweight, odd objects, etc), Never Gymless if you want to go strictly bodyweight.
Both books lay down a theoretical education about the types of strength (e.g., limit strength, explosive power, speed, etc), and how each is developed. Same with the types of cardiovascular fitness, and how to develop the three energy systems. Then he goes through various exercises that develop all of the above, builds those into routines, and finally builds the routines into a 50 day plan. Not only is the entire system fantastic for any combat athlete, but he gives you enough information that you can tweak the whole thing to meet your own goals -- he considers the 50-day plan merely an example of how to apply the principles, and encourages you to tweak it to make it work for you. You may want to head to www.rosstraining.com to read some of the free articles there, to get a feel for things. Great forum there also. |

I second or third what has been said.
Ross's stuff works if you read it thoroughly and put it to work.

I have 50 days left 'til the end of the school year so will be doing the 50-day program from Infinite Intensity starting tomorrow. I am going to make some modifications, however. Since I'll be doing grappling and Muay Thai for metabolic conditioning I am going to focus more on form than on time. Also I am going to adapt some of the core workouts because I have some lower back problems--hyperlordosis and all that crap. So I have my own set of core exercises I do which are challenging but won't screw up my posture even more.
