Default Training @ YMCA Question

I am want to sign up my son for some type of karate. I am looking at a package @ the local YMCA. Could anyone provide any opinion insight into a YMCA program vs. a local karate dojo place? Thanks

I don't think it matters where you train. What's more important is who teaches, what is taught and the quality of the instruction.

yeh, a YMCA doesn't mean they will have someone who specialize in martial arts. It'll just depend on if they have a program and have a edjucated coach.

A few years back, I was looking at teaching kickboxing at a YMCA, and the manager told me that they allready had kickboxing. I requested some information about the program as well as wanted some information about what was being taught and how many years the coach trainined in martial arts. she said she had 2 weeks of training. That's something I had to laugh at and told her, that's not kickboxing then, maybe cardio kickboxing, but you can't learn kickboxing in 2 weeks.

basically , talk to the coach, see if they have a structured program and if thats what you want to training in, then, cool. But if your wanting to get into competition, you'll need to ask if they do train for competition and for what style of competition or if they just train and have the flexibility to compete in any art.
