I don't have enough money to take any martial arts classes. All we do as of yet is lift weights and conditioning. We hit the heavy bag too. What I am wondering is if we do hubud drills, , kicking/destruction drills, and sparring (full contact, of course, anything else would be uncivilized) would we be missing any elements to our training curriculm? If so let me know what I need to succeed.

i believe you need discipline the most. like ryanhall said. this might sound a little weird to you but if someone tries to start shit with you dont give them what they want. if you do you might end up getting hurt. but if it comes down to it and you think you are in danger use your training
. for instance to avoid a fight is to run, talk your way out of it, and never ever hesitate to fight cheap.for you training -- jog, easier said than done, i personally dislike runing because its so damn cold where i live. last night it was -23 with windshield factor .i can't wait till i am an adult so i can get out of this cold prison

descipline dosent do much in the real world...
Goat: i would say that you are missing nothing, but who is going to teach you all of this? If your really desperate go to some MA school's and just say that you want to watch a class .pick up everything you see free of cost. also ask if they have free trial sessions, and after its done (if there are any) just tell them your not interested if not talk to some instructors and try to strike a deal with lower pay for fewer classes. Another idea is just go to a school and ask some students if they would like to free spar and pick up what you can from fighting them. Hope this helps

sorry i didn't mean discipline but control. it seems to me that you need control more than anything. for instance if you are on the street and a guy starts getting up on yo balls. you might want to go over there and break his arm. but what happens if he has a conceled weapon. weelll then you die or get hurt.

I take Karate, and we go by the same principle. Taking your body to next level. I do the same when I'm training solo. But let me tell you, if I didn't have a sensei, to tell me what I'm doing wrong, and what I'm doing right, than I wouldn't have any idea even with solo training. My solo training is basically anything that we do not do in class. This inludes Weight training, jogging, or any other form of cardio. Many people say it s a bodybuilding program, and not a martial arts program, but I say, screw them, because I still workout in the dojo, doing what I need to do.
A sensei can be anyone, who is more expereinced than you. You can even pick up pointers from veterans who have competed. Go into a kickboxing or boxing gym, and pick a fight. You'll probably get your ass kicked, but If you have a friend video tape the fight, you can see what you did wrong, a develop your own techiniques. "I don't deserve this award, but I have arthritis and I don't deserve that either." Jack Benny (1894 - 1974)
