Sure you could learn technique and prepare for somone who knows your art... that is like saying your going to kick your teachers ass in a fight... like he has no ideal of what you know and what you are going to do and how your going to do it.... Of course he does he does the same thing and if he is a good fighter he will know how to counter your moves... as would any good fighter.

The question then becomes who is better are the counter, because that is the person that will win the fight. ^^

HUH?? I said you cant learn (A) technique....you need a view of the overall style, not a idea from here and there....

people who know the system will recognize the flavor of your movements and know how to counter them instantly....you need to understand the "why" of your techniques, not just the "how"...its the why that lets you fit your technique into the conflict at the proper time.

Hello to all and congratulations on finally coming up with an indonesian forum.

I am in the Austin area and study a little of this and that.My main influence is Mande Muda,but I have played with Inosanto/Lacoste and Serak silat styles as well.My local area training group has my head spining from all the various systems and arts we have to cover on any given training day.

Karambit? What's a karambit?

Yes, but short standard knife is main weapon art is based off.

It has a heavy emphasis on lankas and maneuver and taking opponents balance. And it has a very "zig-zaggy" quality to it.

My "grand teacher" was Dutch Indo and learned Cimande from an Indonesian. He traveled for the electric company to different provinces and villages. While there he'd train with the local guru/pendekar. Instead of multiplying juru on juru that he learned, he looked for the underlying movements and classified them - so instead different elbow strikes being spread amoung 20 plus jurus - he created an elbow set - a parry set - a kicking set etc. Freedom of movement to fit the situation is emphasised more than fixed jurus.

Obviously, that approach has pro's and cons to learning the art.

You are fortunate to have such well rounded instruction. It is amazing how many styles of silat there are. Some were even rival styles formatted to defeat neighboring styles. I can't think of a specific name off the top of my head for an example but they are numerous.

Your hybred style sounds like a good one! Can you tell us what the name means Sikap Baru? And where is your school? Are you a resident of the US or some other country?

Sikap Baru means "New way or New Attitude" I've been told.

Nice karambit. Do you make them? What style do you practice - where are you from?

That set of karambits was made for me by James Coogler of CNC Bladewerkz in Texas. (great guy)

I'm also in Ca. USA but don't really practice or train these days. I was exposed to silat for a short time while in the US Navy. There was no formal name for it that I know of. It was a blend of military combatives and nasty knife "tricks"... No lineage, no names... Just a sort of secret underground group of psychopaths that like to play rough.

I live in the San Fernado Valley. I train Bukti Negra in Monrova (I hope I spelt that right.)The head of the system is Pendakar Paul De Thouars.How do I get to your school or what is the name of it, Always interested in seeing new things.

I think it means that as well as NEW POSTURE. It reflects a new goal or new objective of some kind. Being that much of silat is related to the (Muslim) faith it my have other HIDDEN meanings as well. While Silat can be learned by anyone in general there is a STRONG tendency to keep secrets among the elite level players or a DEDICATED few practitioners.

It's just a guess but the name may also mean that the style is in development for a new kind of threat. Silat styles are often PROGRESSIVE meaning that they tend to change, grow or adapt to fit new purposes. I will not speculate what the new purpose might be but it's PROBABLY not sport related...
