Default Hey all

Hi, I’m new to all this, but I love what iv seen so far on this site. I just recently got interested in reality-based self-defense so I have a few questions. A friend gave me a video with a guy named Demi Barbito. This is the kind of stuff i want to start doing, i got nothing against the more traditional arts(I have a little back ground in kickboxing) but I’m looking for something with all the B.S. cut out of it. Now I’m new to all this so I don’t even know if Barbito is the real deal. I guess that's one of my first questions. I’ve seen so many videos adds and web site's that say they are the "Beast" "You have to get this ONE." But how can you tell when your are getting the real deal and not some guy trying to just take my money?
So i guess my next question is for all you who have been at this stuff for a while is, who's videos should i be looking at for reality-based self-defense, and weapons training? (Wish i didn’t have to use videos but I just moved to SC. in the Columbia area and I can’t seam to find any reality-based self-defense schools or classes around) Sorry this turned out to be so long but any info would be greatly appreciated.

video and book are the worst ways to learn any kind of self-defense or fighting system. Nothing beats live, dynamic instruction from a watchfull eye.

if you're learning something different than you are used to and you choose video/book, you will learn bad habits and may not develop other important attributes like timing, reflexes, distance, handling pressure which you learn through repetition in a dynamic environment.

not all is lost. you can certainly do fighter style conditioning by video or book until you can get to an instructor. conditioning is extremely important and probably the only thing you can improve on your own unless you have a good background in one style or system.

Demi Barbito easily makes my top 10 in Reality Based Self Defense intructors and yes he is the real deal, but if you want more, I suggest looking up Richard Dimitri and his Shredder package. Just go to www.senshido.com to learn more about it.

PS - Demi Barbito's style seems straight up. He occasionally writes for black belt.
