hullo everybody.
The Prologue... It all started about five years ago. my uncle, having had a minor martial arts background during his twenties, started taking a Kung Fu class at the community college. shortly thereafter he signed up to train at the Sil Lum club not to far from his house. he got his whole family to start going within a few months, and then recruited me. The Story As such, i have been training in Hung Gar for about five years now. unfortunately, a series of financial problems smacked me in the face, and I had to drop the classes. its been almost six months now since i've gone to a class, but i got all my debt paid off and will be able to afford classes again... The Epilogue Only thing is, i've been considering trying out a different style. i was more than halfway to my black belt, so i might at LEAST go that far in Hung Gar, but for the most part, if anyone sees fit to reply to this thread, perhaps you could tell me a bit about your chosen styles? the primary points and attributes thereof, to aid in my deciding, deciding of the decision of whether or not to seek another style sooner than intended.

I say go back to your core style and get your Black Belt. Then branch out and experiement after you attain your Black.

I practiced Hung Gar for several years, but I left in favor of a good boxing gym. I go into my reasons in depth in this thread: Why I don't practice kung fu anymore

take 1 year of boxing and wrestling (or grappling) and it will make your hung gar blackbelt obsolete.... i think you will enjoy the experience much, much more as well. sparring and rolling are a blast.

I vote spar and roll AFTER you get your black belt.

My formal martial arts training may not be as extensive as a lot of the guys on the forum (five years Shorei Ryu, came out with a green belt and a lot of complaints from Sensei Bill Aney that I didn't test enough), but I'd say figure out what you want to take away from your training. Are you looking for flat out self defense? Maybe a less traditional school, or something like Krav Maga, would be for you. Are you looking for something a little less outright or informal, than stick with tradition and remember that it's been around for a couple hundred years for a reason... But that's just me... what do I know? |

probably better off getting your black belt and your certificate of training, but you can be learning other styles as well. taking your style and adding boxing to it would add a great deal to any art.

Well..
I would say do what you feel you should do, if you wish to train in Hung Gar then you should go there and train, however if you would wish to diverge into a different style you want to think what you are looking for in a martial art. I personally would say that if you want to change then you should branch out into something like Kick Boxing / Freestyle or if you want to keep the "Tradition" then try Maui Thai. Post here to tell us what you want from a martial art and we will all try to advise you on what to do best. Suhieb |
