Default Allo all.

I've spent the past year trying to get in shape for the army. About half a year ago I started looking into alot of the training philosophy of Bruce Lee and eventually got interested in Jeet Kun Do.

I've never had any formal training with martial arts. Really the only combat experience I've had has been a few self-defense scenarios, But I've always been interested in all forms of martial arts.

So, yeah. Allo all!

By the way, if anyone has been through army basic and has some tips about basic or getting ready for it, I'm open to suggestions. =)

JKD has nothing to do with prepairing for any military basic training.

Although you should definitely take any advice from Tom on preparing for the military Wolfeye, I just have to argue your point on JKD Tom.

While I see where you're coming from. I do believe that JKD has some application in every facet of life. Even preparing for basic.

Regardless, Being interested in JKD wasn't something I picked up to get ready for the army. It is more of a separate interest.

Interesting response and I see what you mean.

From a technical perspective, wolfeye is better off following a routine that is more functional for what he will be doing. From a philosophical perspective, JKD is a way of thinking or approaching an obstacle that could be useful in other areas of life.

I've taken up exercising more on a regular basis (Sit-ups, Push-ups, running, the basic stuff.) I was just wondering if there was anything else I could do to physically prepare. Swimming maybe?

You're not really required to swim in the Army - you are required to swim a bit in the Marines (they have their Combat Water Swim Test) and regular Navy (3rd Class Survival Qualification).

You could use swimming on days that you're not running - that would improve your conditioning alot while allowing your legs to rest.

Situps, Pushps alone can get boring and repetitive. However, you need to be able to bang out alot of them to do well on your physical fitness tests (PFTs).

I would recommend looking at Stewart Smith's material for Army Basic Training.

Wolfeye, do you have any initial numbers for us?

I believe the Army PFT is 2:00 of maximum pushups, 2:00 rest, 2:00 maximum situps, 2:00 rest and a 2 mile timed run?

Let us know where you're at. What you've found so far from your own research and ideas and see if we can help you get where you need to be.

Run private, Run! Best thing you can do for basic is to run all you can. Get your knees in shape and your BMI down.

I'm jealous of you, I wish I could go in again! Have fun!

When you say initial numbers, you mean what I can do at the moment? Approx in 2 mins:

Sit-ups: 60
Push-ups: 30
Running: I usually run a mile 2-3 times a week.

Sit-ups were always by strong suit in school. Unfortunately I can't say the same for running (Though I'm alot better than I used to be) and that goes double for push-ups(though that's getting better too). I don't think I'm up to snuff to pass the PFTs for passing basic, but I'm pretty sure I'm in the range for getting into basic. I figure basic will toughen me up alot more, but I also figure the more I sweat now, the less I'll sweat then (And the more you sweat now AND then, means the less chance to bleed on the battlefield, if that should happen.)

That's just it, though; A start. With any luck, I hope to be running 2 miles 2-3 times a week instead of 1 soon and dropping to pump out as many push-ups as possible at random times during the day (Whenever I don't have anything to do at th moment) has gotten to be a common practice, it seems.

My sister claims they run trainees 4 miles a day in basic, but then again, she wasn't in the army and my family has a old saying: don't let the facts get in the way of a good story.
