Cool Greetings and Many Respects to all here

I just signed up and am just introducing myself to the forum.
I have been practicing martial arts for over 16 yrs now. started in aikido and then did shotokan for a while and in 1992 began my journey in the chinese internal and external arts. i currently focus on hsingi and pakua,,and i do alot of qigong work(5animal frolics)
My previous training was under the shaolin-do system. i left to become an independant and train on my own. Before i was at Shaolin-do i was learning from a man who was a disciple of Dr. John Ng.
there are my stats and i hope i can engage in some decent debates and converstaion with the folks here.

Many Respects,,Lightning&Earth

Thumbs up

Welcome L & E,

It is nice to see someone who comes from a totally different background show interest in Brazillian Jiu Jitsu. That is why you're here right? To compare and contrast what you know with the knowledge of other forum members?

If so, I look forward to meaningful conversations concerning your art, my art, and the arts represented here at Defend.net.

Thumbs up i respect all art forms and systems

yeah i am not a bragger about styles. whatever works is good for me. as far as BJJ goes. i have seen it done,,live as well as on the boob toob. i like it and would like to know more and blend with my hsing i training. the aspects when compared to BJJ and hsing i (from a fighting standpoint) are very similar,, only hsing i deals with more striking,,there are some groundfighting techniques,,but it seems as though you have to search all ends of the earth to find the teacher who knows the groundfighting to hsing i. BJJ seems as though it would combine well with Hsing i.

thanks for the welcome

Many respects,,,Lightningand Earth

I have only a passing familiarity with Hsing I and Bagua (I hope these are spelled correctly). We had a husband and wife team come to our dojo to use the space to teach a few of their students. Our dojo is small and rather drafty in the winter, not to mention the floors are padded for throws and ground grappling, which did not suit their needs for kata and moving well across the floor. Our students had no problem walking on the mats, but, to each their own, eh?

So from what I understand, and correct me if i'm wrong, Hsing I is very similar to Tai Chi Chaun; the internal aspects of Chinese Boxing?

Can you share with me some of the differences and similarities with BJJ or perhaps you can check my own website and see if there are common aspects between the two.

Regards,

SZ

Post hsing i

is more fight oriented than tai chi. the internal principles are similar. but you have a very linear straight forward fighting system within hsing i , based on 5 fist or punching methods, a linking form that links the 5 fists together and you have 12 animal steps that relate to the 5 fists. now there is some groundfighting associated with hsing i but i have never seen it. so i rely on other ground fighting principles.

Question

Do you have a website that I can reference to learn more about your school and/or your art?

Default My former school used to be this one

swshaolin.com (its shaolin-do) but the sight will not give you any other info specifically on hsing i. my former sifu before SD was a disciple of John Ng in kentucky and he taught me alot of hsing i and pakua principles as well as praying mantis and qigong work.
i am an independant now with no school. in the Sd system i am ranked a 2nd degree black belt(doesnt mean much) and certified to teach the curriculumn.
my hsing i forms training i recieved at SD as well as the classical pakua form and yang style taichi chuan.

i no longer reside at that school nor do i teach the sd curriculumn. if you want to know more about hsing i chuan there is a site in california created by a teacher called mike patterson(i have no affiliation with him) but this site can be very informative to you with regards to hsing i. other wise i reccomend that you go to a local bookstore and look up hsing i in the martial arts section.

Many respects,,,Lightning and Earth
