I recently stumbled upon the Full Autumn Moon Ninjitsu School located in San Diego, CA. http://www.fullautumnmoon.com/

I was fairly interested in learning this martial art, although I have no previous training in an MA. I read some of the earlier discussions on Ninjitsu on this board (how crappy/cool it is) and would like some insight on what you guys think about this school. Is 1k a year excessive? Or what are some other suggestions for a new 21 y/o MA. BTW, I don't want to take BJJ just because I live in SD....

This website screams BS. It says almost nothing about the things he teaches, except some vague stuff about 'attitude' and 'wisdom' and being too dangerous for competition. It says almost nothing about the instructors qualifications, except that he has military service and a masters degree from 'Stanford' and one sentence about being the only white guy in a thousand years authorized to teach (I mean, come on).

Type this guys name (or his masters name) into Google and you get some stuff about massage, and China, and references to this website and maybe some martial arts references (I didn't look at the pages, just the headers). Type the name Gracie or Ajarn Chai, or Dan Inosanto,, or Mike Swain into Google and you get direct references by the dozens.

You are in a major city, you shouldn't have any trouble finding Legit world class intructors, or people who trained directly under world class instructors. Skip this guy and his 'Ninjitsu'. It's a fraud.

What form of martial arts would you recommend? I don't really think I can be a good one to one fighter, I haven't been in a fight my whole life and I'm 21. I'm in decent shape and play a lot of sports though... and I fancy weapons. I mean I know I would never get to use a katana in a fight, but I would like to learn how to wield a sword or a bo in my life-time.

I always wanted to get into martial arts when I was younger, but my family never had the money. I tried TKD as a child, and at the time I enjoyed it, but now I don't think I would waste my time with that.

and u right. don't waste ur time with tkd...a green belt in jj could take down black belt "masters" in that horrific excuse for a martial art...u hav 12 yr olds training in it for 6 months and coming out teachers in the "art"..it's horrible, completely inaffective and has no pracicality whatso ever. i would try maybe kenpo or something like that. then move on to other after u progress in that. but not tkd.....WAYYYYY overrated

Most people don't get in fights enough to justify Martial arts for 'self defense'. I think 99% of Martial artists really do it for fun and little else. You are in that category and know it - congratulations and welcome to the club.

If you like weapons, you might consider kali. It's Filipino and is mostly weapons - sticks (around 26") and knives. There are some traditional aspects to the style but mostly it's direct and generally its held in high regard amoung martial arts types.

Lots of other good arts out there. If I were you, I'd spend a few hours looking over this board. Lots of opinions here and you're sure to find one that resonates with you.

If your into swords, have you considered fencing? It isn't what many people think of when considering martial arts, but it is one. If you took up fencing there would be lots of clubs wherever you went to train with/compete with.

Ive trained with Frank Dux "Bloodsport" in my years and if ever can learn ninjitsu then defintly go for it! I mean this is a guy who has almost any record there is to have. His books was taken off the shelf by the government because it was too revealing. I mean if theres a way to beat someone in it would be in ninjitsu. The problem today is I dont think there are schools alowwed to teach ninjitsu. Well in CA anyways.

The only legitimate ninjutsu school are the organizations that were passed down from Takamatsu Toshitsugu. The 3 organizations are the Bujinkan , Genbukan or theJinenkan all other organizations especially the so called Koga style are fakes. Historically there was no Koga ryu. Koga was a prefecture of Japan that did have many ninja clan but, there was no tradition called Koga Ryu. There is a very good instructor in SD by the name of Dan Weidman his email is danw@viser.net.
