Are Okinawan people Japanese or are they a different race, and is the okinawan language different then the main land Japan? If so is it still that way or is it being Japanese?

Well it is a bit like asking Are the welsh, brithish? Yes they are, but are the Welsh English no they aren't

Today Okinawa is a province of the mainland but it used to be an independent kingdom, it still has its own language, also their ties to china were actually stronger than those with japan

There is an Okinawan cultural identity.
Okinawan peoples are are also unique in appearance and attitude. They also have their own, different from mainland Japanese, customs and diet.

Okinawans are typically a bit taller, stockier, tanner, and hairier than mainland Japanese, and they have their own dialect known as Hogan. Instead of the traditional "arigato gozaimas<sp?" for Thank you, the Okinawan dialect is "ni-hey-davey-liu".

Some of them look like native taiwanese or filipinos. Another point the older generations used to have in common with filipinos is "okinawanese time" (i.e. "filipinos time") .
