well there are many different style of aikido, and i know it's good for tournement
you will hear mixed feelings about the art; some will say that it's very devastating with many years of hard training. others will say that those years are wasted when you could've done something else. the best thing to do, is to experiement. go out and see for your self. ask the instructor questions like, "what is your policy on practical self defense?" " are there forms?" "how long have you been doing it?" and it's always a good idea to trust your gut feeling with somehting like this
but remember, no contracts! they are a pain in the butt

I am interested in Aikido, especially in Tomiki and Yoshinkan Aikido. However, I would not suggest one to start Aikido before having a competency in a hard striking art. You can always go to www.aikiweb.com to ask the Aikidokas.
