Like wrestlers and bjj guys the cartlige in their ears breaks down from years of scrubbing their ears up against their opponents while trying to secure dominant position and take-downs. The worst case of this I have ever seen is Randy Couture(sp?). Look up a picture of him, and you will see what 20+ years of wrestling can do to your ears.

It's called either cauliflower ear or mat ear, its from rubbing against the mat or gis or whatever it is you do and not draining or taking care of it afterwards. And yah, anyone with cauliflower ear is definitely knowledgeable about grappling and not one to be trifled with lightly.
