Default Judo Chokes

Just wondering what kind of chokes judo has , specifically standing up.... and is there alot you must learn before you learn chokes ... just judging from anyones past experience with it... and info on any other arts with effective standing chokes would be good... not looking for anything that will kill a person just something that could be used effectively to subdue a person. Thanks

I'm not too sure about standing chokes. I'm not a judoka, but most of the chokes I've seen judokas perform have been on the ground.

The only judo choke that I know of that would be that effective outside the dojo is the Hadaka Jimi (Naked arm strangle). This, as most chokes, can be deadly if applied incorrectly. Most chokes take a minimum of 20 to 30 seconds to work, if you apply them perfectly. In a street fight that's a small eternity. Cross chokes from the front leave you open to counter attack from punches and kicks. Scarf chokes rely on gaining access from the rear and the uki having a sturdy shirt. If you're looking to control a person, look maybe to some good joint lock techniques. They're usually more effective and most don't run the risk of a homicide charge!

Blood chokes work. They're fast and hurt like hell. However, most attempts to subdue someone by choking them will probably fail. So you'd need to practice a lot with someone that doesnt mind being choked. The person has to be off-balance and held tight and close to the body.

But why are you so interested in chokes and strangles? It's much easier to subdue someone with locks.

make sure that if you're going to choke someone out, you practice safety and Resuscitation (sp?) first.

But above is a link you might find helpful.

Still looking?

Judo has many methods for choking and strangling. Many will work just fine with both fighters on their feet or not. There is no such thing as a non lethal choke. Hold it long enough to stop breathing and guess what? They die.

A choke is the best way to subdue a violent opponent. IMHO.

lol this is a pretty old topic, but no im not still looking, Ive found a few good chokes that I always seem to be able to apply, the guillotine to be precise, for w/e reason I can sink that on anyone, and they always tap, in my opinion its the most effective too, maybe the rear naked choke is better, but the Guillotine works REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL well

Good one. The reverse naked choke (mae hadaka jime) or guillotine is a good one. I like the Sankaku Jime (or "triangle") with the figure four using your legs. It's less sneaky now than it was 20 years ago but it's a good one. Have you choked anyone "out" yet? What are the other chokes you have used?

chokes shouldnt take 30 seconds to work. if u know what you are doing they will work immediately.

chokes work while standing up or on the ground, they work from anywere as long as u can get to your opponents neck. collar chokes as well as gi less chokes.

The Carotid Sinus Is Where The Veins In Your Neck Show . Snap On The Choke And You Get The Carotid Reflex.. Just Like A Knockout Takes About The Count Of Two. If You Know What You Are Doing Judo Chokes Are The Most Powerful And Deadly Weapon In Your Arsenal. If You Don't Know Its Coming It Is Too Late. The Stronger The Neck The Better They Work... More Muscle To Close Of The Blood Flow.you Can Even Cross Your Legs Over Your Hands To Make The Choke That Much More Powerful! Very Very Deadly. You Can Use The Judo Suit Just Like A Peice Of Rope, Sleeves, Collar, Lapelbelt Etc...

The triangle, guillotine, and sleeper (rear-naked) chokes are probably the most efficient to use in a self-defense situation IMO, especially if you grapevine them while doing it. Most expert grapplers can put a person to sleep in just about 5 seconds when applied correctly. 30 seconds is stretching it a bit, but maybe that's how long it'll take if you're fighting someone who's jacked up on cocaine or something? Blood chokes are extremely dangerous as they can cause brain damage to the victim.

Triangle is kinda hard to work though, especially if your not just grappling... I like it though and try to work it whenever I have someone in the gaurd and cant Guillotine them....

i like the guillotine from the top when your in the guard. u gotta get up a bit towards one of their shoulders. put one hand down on the ground above his shoulder and use the other to go around and under his neck and guillotine him. its from an unexpected position, alot of people dont see it. u gotta do it fast because moving up and putting your hands down on the ground leaves u very exposed to being rolled over or attacked. onces u got your arm around his neck, just pull it upwards until he is forced to break his guard until u can sink it in all the way or get to a better position and escape. its ok if u cant get the guillotine , if u can get your arm under his neck and around and pull his neck up enough he will have to break guard and get on his knees to save his neck. then just sink it in.
