Can be an excellent style, but you're going to have to be mentally tough to do it at a good school. Other schools you may like are Enshin and Ashihara(?).

Kyokushin has traditional forms
like Pinan kata Saifa Sanshin or Seienshin Ashihara and Enshin have fighting forms, thes look the same with or without opponent, with simple combos like left jab, right lowkick, pull his left arm with your right hand and left elbow to the face/head, turn......etc etc

i studied kyokushin and its pretty brutal. in fact its probably the most brutal of all the karates. its tournaments are knock down fighting. whoever is still standing is the winner however listen carefully, go to this dojo and watch a couple of times before making any decisions to join. the most important to look for is a competant and knowlegable instructor. that will make the difference between an amazing experience and a bad one. the dojo i went to was taught by a guy who had a blackbelt who told me he was teaching for 5 years but what i didnt know was he started teaching this dojo at the rank of yellow and had received his black belt a week before i went to check it out. not enough experience to teach in my opinion. anyway as with other karates it can be street savy if your instructor wants it to be and doesnt teach outdated moves like wristgrabs( who grabs your wrist in the street?) practical info is the way to go. it does have katas and you need to practise them . mas oyama was the founder and the guys was nuts. he went up on a mountain retreat by himself for somethin like a year and a half and did nothin but practise. shaved one eyebrow off so he could not give up and return to society. then the guys fights over 50 bulls with his bare hands until he got a horn through the lung(ouch). check out this link for more info: http://www.kyokushin.ca/kyokushin.html
