Default Okinawa-te ---> Karate

I've been readin karate history, and I found out that karate is only a sport version of more deadly okinawa-te made by son of Gichin Funakoshi. So, is it (okinawa-te) is still deadly or is it forgotten? Where can I find the info on it?

Okinawan-Te is an indigenous fighting form in Okinawa, and was really synthesized with White Crane Kempo (Kung Fu) by Sakugawa, who was taught by Kusanku ("Kanku") and led to Shuri-Te
