    *sigh*...

First: Both Kungfu and Karate are very broad terms that refer to many different sub styles which differ from each other.

Second: Even if you take something people call "bad" - though I believe in no such thing - like Aikido, as long as you're good at it and put in the effort you can be a good fighter.

Third: Kungfu is not always "high flying" as you so stated. Kungfu is fluid and fast but it is also very powerful. What you see in Jet Li movies is probably not exactly what you will be doing in the dojo. Keep that in mind.

Fourth: It's the man not the art. Same as my second point but I suppose the last point should always be a conclusion.

tkd_person89 made some good points, but didnt really answer your question. So I'll say karate, cause my friend who does kung fu said it was great, but its mostly defense n in a fight I rather attack than defend. But thats me.

What style of kung fu are you considering? Is it a northern or southern style? Have you found a good school in your area? There are literally hundreds of different types of kung fu and they are all very different. The style I practice doesn't really jump or (for the most part) throw kicks above our opponents ribs. Instead we tend to focus on low stances and chin na.

Can I suggest niether? If this is in preparation for working in law enforcment I would say try Combat Hapkido, Krav Maga, Kempo Karate, Bujinkan/genbukan or one of the Filipino or southeast asian martial arts.

its the man and the art the man uses techniques from a art in a certain way to determine his success in a fight. without the art the man would have no way to defend himself.
