Kiai is a breathingmethod used in most types of karate.
When a karate-ka has performed a move he would shout KIAI to let out air so the technique is stronger and more locked.

Some people say kiai is the best form of self defense.

''In a fight you must make as much noise as possible''

This is true, it would scare the attacker and force him to think you know what you're doing.
